Bangkok

Bangkok is a city like no other, merging the bizarre, wonderful and magnificent into one unique combination that fascinates its visitors. From futuristic districts to tranquil temples, the skyscapers that mark the landscape hide an intriguing diversity of culture and architecture beneath. Nicknamed the City of Angels, you can discover a rich history of Thailand and learn about the origins of Bangkok, whilst taking in some beautiful sights along the way. Although a thriving city, Bangkok has plenty of charm and is one of the most popular destinations on Far East cruise holiday itineraries.

Sightseeing Attractions

Before the arrival of the modern cityscape, Bangkok was a much more modest place. Its roots were in religion, and as such, there are countless temples that shimmer majestically throughout the area and remain important sites of worship today. You’ll have the opportunity to experience the best of the country’s architecture; some of the most impressive temples include the Temple of the Golden Buddha (Wat Traimit) and Temple of the Reclining Buddha (Wat Pho), to name a few. However the jewel in the crown of Bangkok’s architectural crown is the Grand Palace, sitting regally on the waterfront of the Chao Phraya River.

The Grand Palace is just one of the attractions that you will see by taking a river cruise down the Chao Phraya. A chance to experience the city from the Canals that have gained the status of ‘Venice of the East’, this wonderful day tour is an excursion offered by many cruise operators. Along the way you can take in major attractions such as the Temple of Dawn and the Royal Barges Museum, whilst enjoying the beautiful scenery and traditional floating homes that line the banks of the waters. The Floating Market (Damnoen Saduak) is also a highlight of the canals, and gives you the chance to sample some of the local delicacies for which Thailand is famous.

History & Culture

As one of the few countries of the East that has been unaffected by colonial rule in its past, Thailand has a rich culture and history that can be seen throughout Bangkok. This is interwoven with religion in many cases, and Thai dance-drama is a ritual that is a joy to watch during festivals and shows. You can also join in with the fun at one of the many bars that play live Thai music if you want to mingle with the locals on an evening. For history, take a trip to the Bangkok Folk Museum to learn about the evolution of Bangkok and the country’s traditions over the centuries.

Rich in variety and a law unto itself, Bangkok is a brilliant place to explore and is a unique destination that stands out on any Asian cruise itinerary. So if you want to sample authentic Thai food and get an insight into the traditional culture of this amazing city, it’s a wonderful place to visit.
