Hi, i've never been myself but a few of my friends went last year and loved it.  They said there's a few places they wouldnt want to venture at night but i guess thats like any city really isnt it.  I'll ask them and see what they reccommend.

We visited Rio on Arcadia February 2013,and

in February 2004 when on Oriana.

We saw changes but really it is still essential to remember that this is not the UK!

Be vigilant and don't go down dodgy side streets or off the main areas.

Take local advice on how to stay safe and don't be over confident that all is safe.People ARE regularly robbed!

Hope this helps.

We had 6 nights in Rio in 2006. Stayed right on the Copacabana promenade. Did a brill day trip to see the Christ statue and Sugar Loaf and the cathedral etc. organised this through the hotel. It was US60 each but we'll worth it as we had a brilliant Brazilian lunch where they come round with stuff on skewers etc included in the fare. The hotel was the only place in the World where we have been where the receptionist warned us about crime and told me to take off all jewellery. We were also warned by people in the street too. From the rooftop of our hotel we could hear gunfire whilst sunbathing!! Don't be put off going though. We loved it and ate out in the evenings very cheaply. Go for it!!!

Have always fancied a trip to S.America, next one to tick off in 2014.

I am doing an overland trip from Rio to take in Iguaza falls.

Would like any information on this. Hope I shall be able to keep up with the youngsters, but having done China last year, I might be o.k.!!!
