Will Carnival And/or Rci Enter The River Cruise Market?

6 posts in this topic

Hi  This is purely a speculative question.  With Viking now entering the ocean cruise market and Crystal entering the river cruising, do you think the "big" players in the ocean cruise sector will enter the rapidly expanding river cruise segment of the holiday market.  I think any new cruise line is a good thing but I am uncertain whether the river cruise can sustain the growth seen in recent years, with the increase in the number of berths I can see that the market is near saturation?  Would you be interested in sailing on a Cunard/P&O river vessel?

I presume that the big corporations have been looking at this and would not be surprised to see them enter the market.  It would be interesting to see whether any of these businesses use one of their existing brands or whether they introduce a new one.  I guess that will depend upon whether the brand characteristics carry over.

It will be interesting to see any of the big cruise lines like you've suggested Land Ahoy will enter into the river cruise market. I'm not sure if I would be interested in sailing with Cunard, P&O or the likes on a river cruise if they did ever enter this market, but never say never.

I don't see the likes of P&O/Cunard/Royal Caribbean making a move into the river cruise market. I don't think the niche fits with their current target audiences and suggested, the saturation levels of this type of cruising is rapidly rising year on year.

Agree with you there sammy. The river cruise market is already overloaded and with current prices they would never appeal to the RCI cruiser.
