Taster River Cruise

11 posts in this topic

Can anybody here recommend a good first river cruise? I'm looking for a 2 or 3 night sample cruise that won't cost the earth. My plan is to cruise the Far East next year but not sure whether to book an ocean or river cruise. As I have never experienced river cruising I wondered if there were any cheap / mini river cruises available.

Most cruise agents specialise in river cruises although you will find dedicated websites for river cruising. I’d be tempted to look at Viking River Cruises but I’m not entirely sure if they offer short cruises and I don’t think they are that cheap. There’s a company called Shearings who have some good deals, you’d probably be looking at £400-700 per person for a 5 night cruise, again I’m not sure on the quality of these ships

I've heard of Shearings and they are good value but if you're looking for quality then you should definitely go with Viking for a river cruise.  Their brilliant and always berth right alongside the port, no long walks is a big perk!

Viking always look good and seem to be everywhere at the minute.  Everything on tv seems to be sponsored by Viking.  Do seem like the go to people for a river cruise though.

I had the privilege of being invited to Boppard in the Rhine Valley to meet suppliers at a trade event there.  I don't mind admitting that I wasn't looking forward to it, but had an amazing time, we travelled up and down the Rhine visiting various market towns.  The scenery was fantastic and met some brilliant locals, look for visits to Marksburg Castle,  I would go again tomorrow.

We were in a similar position to you about 18 months ago. We were keen on Viking's Magnificent Mekong stay & cruise in Vietnam and Cambodia but we hadn't tried river cruising before and so we weren't sure how we'd take to it. We did one of Viking's cheaper river cruises to find out.

We chose to do The Elegant Elbe. It was 10 days, so not exactly what you're asking for, and we discovered that we thoroughly enjoyed river cruising. We also thought that Viking River Cruises provided an excellent, professional product. So we booked the Mekong trip.

Having now done two Viking river cruises in Europe as well as the one in South East Asia I must point out that there were similarities but also huge differences, with the latter being far better in many respects. I can expand on that if you like, but in the meantime I'll post a review of The Elegant Elbe - just in case you're tempted... ;)

I previously posted a comment on this thread about seein Viking River Cruises everywhere and now I see they are due to move into the ocean cruising market as well.  Seems they really are everywhere!

Good morning Sammy Sun.

They certainly are making a splash.

I'm a fan of Viking River Cruises - done the Danube and Elbe and have the Douro booked for next year. I have taken up their very good offer on their Viking Star Maiden Ocean cruise season.

Here is a link...

But back to your OP. I've not heard of any taster cruises with any River Cruise companies. All appear to be centred around 7 days actual ship board time with extendable  hotel packages bolted on.

Of course River Cruising doesn't appear to be as cheap(?) as ocean cruising but it is both different and good value for money: as both myself and Dave will testify.

Have just completed a short river cruise in the UK. Yes, the UK, with English Holiday Cruises. They have one small ship, the Edward Elgar, carrying only 22 passengers along either the River Seven or the Gloucester-Sharpness Canal. Excellent food and very laid back.
