Pre-Paid Tips Dose This Affect The Service Offered?

4 posts in this topic

Tips, Service Charges, Gratuities is always a “Hot Topic” with most cruise passengers (and on this forum), but if these charges are included in the cost do you think it affects the service given?  Most luxury Cruise Lines do not require you to “Tip the Crew” and the service given is exemplary, but what about the more main stream companies?

Have you experience a drop in standards since they have started adding them to the on board accounts, or believe you have been treated differently for opting to have them removed?

Hi  It is a possibilty that the standards would fall if the senior staff are lax in their duties and not checking up on the work undertook by the wait/cleaning staff.  However, in my experience the inclusion of tips has led to an increase in the service levels.  However,  most of the cruise lines which do include gratuities are in the higher end of the cruise market although Thomson, Saga and Voyages of Discovery do include these in the boarding fare and passengers rate the levels of service as good or above.  I suggest that the staff who receive their pay as a salary rather than relying tips are more likely to be content, knowing what they will earn each week and are not frustrated at providing good service for many passengers and then not receiving any or reduced tips from some of these individuals.

It's not only the 'Luxury' cruise lines that "...do not require you to “Tip the Crew...” River Song.   Thomson include tips in their price.

As you say Land Ahoy Thomson and others do it so why not all of them? I suppose the whole time that the cruise industry is dominated by the North American market they will remain.

My personal opinion is that nothing has changed. People have always given gratuities and those that don't have the gratuities removed from their account. The crew therefore are earning the same amount. The level of service I feel has nothing to do with gratuities but more about giving a good service so they get a good rating on the feedback enabling them to be in a good position when applying for their next contract.
