Much is made of Valentine’s Day getaways but what if you’re just not about that ‘sunset toasts and love hearts in the sand’ shizzle? If your idea of romance is experiencing absolute terror and sharing the cold sweats with your nearest and dearest, you could be forgiven for thinking cruising is absolutely not the one for you. But, my fearless adrenaline junkie, that is where you are very much mistaken.
While the world goes mad for balcony breakfasts and heart-shaped truffles, we thought we’d look at the other side of things; the adventures that you’ll laugh about hysterically over whisky chasers and the excitement that keeps you pestering your ‘better half’ to book again so you can get another much-needed dose of adrenaline.
If you think couple’s cruising is all about strolls on the beach and linked-arm champagne toasts, think again and read on.
DAREDEVILS OF DUBAI
Dubai isn’t just ultra-luxury skyscrapers and sandy beaches. For ultimate adventure, head to the soaring sand dunes of the Arabian Desert.
» Extreme Dune Buggy – Strap in and prepare for the red sand dunes around you to become but a blur, as you fly over them at breakneck speed. Go it alone or opt to experience the expertise of a former rally driver to send you careering precariously through the desert.
» Quad Bike Safari – Go off-road in the Arabian Desert and experience the adrenaline-fuelled fun of a powerful quad bike. Rev your engine and get ready to spend the day mounting the sand dunes on four wheels, building up a ravenous appetite for the BBQ that follows.
» Sandboarding – In the snow you snowboard and in the sea you paddle board; in the sand dunes of Dubai, you sandboard. Hop into your Hummer and head to the sand dunes, where you’ll strap on your sandboard and get accustomed with this popular desert sport. Easier than snowboarding and a lot drier than paddle boarding, sandboarding is taking the world of extreme sports by storm.
RUNNING ON ADRENALINE IN AUSTRALIA
Darwin is the capital city of Australia’s Northern Territory and is a hive of adrenaline fuelled activities. The warm waters that edge the city are prime location for water-based adventures.
» Shark Diving – Call us predictable, but when we think of Australia we think of beaches, barbecues…and BIG sharks. If sunbathing and sightseeing isn’t for you, then shark diving might be more up your street. Cullen Bay is minutes away from the Darwin Port Terminal, and it is from here that you’ll depart for your underwater adventures, coming face to face with tiger sharks in Darwin’s warm waters.
With the bait set, you’ll hop in the cage and be lowered into the water; nothing but the cage between you and these fierce ocean hunters.
» Crocodile Cage of Death – Located in Darwin, Crocosaurus Cove is home to some of the largest saltwater crocodiles on the planet…and they’d like to throw you in there with them.
Crocosaurus Cove is home to Australia’s only crocodile dive. The transparent ‘cage of death’ holds two people, so you and your beloved can lean on each other for support as you’re lowered into the tank with a giant prehistoric killer. Your face to face encounter will be photographed, just in case you can’t quite believe you actually did it.
NO FEAR IN NORWAY
A Norwegian Fjords cruise takes you to the heart of Norway’s most spectacular scenery; soaring cliff faces and deep, dark waters are primed for adventures aplenty.
» White Water Rafting – Bergen is the gateway to the Norwegian Fjords and exploring the city is a must. If your itinerary allows plenty of time, take a train out of the city to one of the area’s ravage rivers, where white water rafting will see you tread a fine line between thrill and terror.
» Kayaking – Little makes you realise just how small you are in the grand scheme of things, than kayaking through the Norwegian Fjords; mountainous cliffs soaring either side of you and the deep, dark water stirring beneath.
» Bungee Jumping – Adrenaline junkies have long taken to the skies in search of their thrills and Bergen offers jumpers some of the most spectacular views in the world. Rugged Norwegian mountains, the city lights of Bergen and the dark waters of the North Sea come together in a unique blend of scenery for the ultimate experience.
Every one of these adrenaline-fuelled adventures are within easy reach of cruise ports and fit easily into a single shore day. Still think cruising’s boring? We didn’t think so.
