For some, cruising is about luxury. For some, it’s about the exotic destinations.
For others, it’s about the food! Food is a massive part of the cruise lifestyle, and passengers are welcomed to enjoy breakfast, brunch, lunch, afternoon tea, dinner, and supper on board, as well as late night room service nibbles!
There’s little wonder why we all return from a cruise holiday with our trousers feeling a little bit tighter than when we boarded!
However, for some passengers, on board dining isn’t quite as simple as sitting down and tucking in – what if that dish contains nuts, dairy, wheat, or any other ingredient you’re allergic to? This can be a concerning factor for many holidaymakers, especially when booking a cruise for the first time.
Don’t worry! Believe it or not, cruise ship restaurants are some of the most accommodating dining establishments in the world – whatever your allergy or intolerance, it can be managed perfectly on board. The crew are there to ensure you have an amazing time, and that means understanding and helping you choose foods to fit in with your personal diet.
The main issue with nut allergies is that they can be triggered by even just a small trace of nuts, so the safety of buffet dining is something to keep in mind.
If you’ve read anything about cruising with allergies before, you may have seen advice telling you to stick to the main dining room, and bypass the buffet because of cross contamination.
Why? This is your holiday, and if you enjoy buffet dining, then don’t feel like you can’t eat there. Simply ask the chef to cook up something fresh for you. Chefs are always there to take requests – such as speciality dishes to order, for example, and they’ll be only too happy to make something up that you can be sure is free from nuts.
If you simply can’t start your day with a caffeine hit (and who of us can after a night out at the theatre, or enjoying the on board bars?), you’ll be keen to locate the coffee shops and cafes on your ship for that much-needed cappuccino, chai tea, or perhaps even a cheeky Irish coffee.
The question is; do these coffee shops cater to those who are lactose intolerant?
The good news is that specialist coffee venues on board will usually stock both cow’s milk and soy milk, much like your local Starbucks or Costa would. You may also be able to find lactose-free milk on board some cruise lines. If you want to enjoy a coffee after dinner in the dining room, you can request dairy-free milk prior to sailing.
Royal Caribbean, for example, will ensure a range of soy and lactose-free milks are on board. All you need to do is advise our Cruise Consultants at the time of booking and we will make sure your chosen cruise line are completely aware.
Can cruise ships accommodate gluten allergies? Yes! You may find it more convenient to opt for classic dining, as you’ll have the same waiters each night of your voyage, but this isn’t a necessity.
As long as you don’t mind making your requests known, there’s no reason not to choose flexible dining.
Something you might like to do is to request a menu in advance. Your waiter will be able to suggest some changes that could be made to the dishes to make them safe for you to eat, such as creating a soup without the croutons, for example.
While you can request changes on the night, it may be simpler to put your order in early, should you wish.
Leave it to Us!
When booking your cruise with Bolsover Cruise Club, we ensure everything runs smoothly from start to finish, which includes informing the cruise line that you have special dietary requirements.
While we still recommend you meet with the Maître D when you board the ship, your allergies, dietary requirements, and requests will all be noted. If you’re travelling with children who have food allergies, we’ll also inform the on board children’s clubs of their needs – the clubs will usually politely ask parents not to bring their own food into the play areas during the voyage to prevent triggering allergies.
You needn’t worry about dietary requirements when booking your cruise through us; we’ll ensure you’re well catered to on board.
Our One2One service means that you will have the same contact right through your booking journey. From the moment you first call or visit us in person, you will have your very own dedicated Cruise Consultant.
This means no messing around having to explain your concerns or dietary requirements to a different person each time you call or having to speak to multiple departments just to get an answer, you simply have one point of contact who will take care of everything for you.
We understand that travelling with a specific dietary requirement can be a worrying matter, especially for first time cruisers that have never experienced the service on board. It’s our job to put your mind at ease and that’s exactly what we do.
We will inform all the necessary personnel to ensure that your requirements are noted and ready to be dealt with as soon as you arrive on board. Our state of the art system enables this to be done quickly, efficiently and without fuss to alleviate any concerns you may have.
