Spain is more popular than ever in terms of family holidays, not to mention cruising. A combination of sun, sea and sand appeals to families looking for a short-haul holiday each summer and it isn’t difficult to sniff out the family-friendly excursions once you arrive. Spain has something for everyone and here is our pick of the best.
Family-Friendly Excursions – Oceanographic City – Valencia
Valencia’s Oceanographic City is the largest marine complex in Europe, with each of its buildings designed to represent a different sea or ocean. If the kids go crackers for wildlife, this is the place to go. Watch penguins in the ‘Antarctic’, see the only beluga whales in Europe in the ‘Arctic’ centre and watch octopus weave their way through the shipwrecks of the ‘Mediterranean’.
In the ‘Ocean’ centre, one of the biggest aquariums in the world at 7 million litres, you’ll find tiger sharks, sawfish and sunfish swimming above as you walk through the underwater tunnel.
Mealtimes are an aquatic treat too, with floor-to-ceiling windows in the Submarino Restaurant lending the impression of dining below the ocean.
Family-Friendly Excursions – Tibidabo – Barcelona
Barcelona is one of the cruising’s most popular Mediterranean ports of call and a particular favourite with families. There are countless attractions in the city but families should set off in search of Tibidabo, a 100 year old amusement park that is considered one of the best days out in Spain.
Tibidabo will appeal to everyone for different reasons; older kids will love the 4D cinema and Avio; the world’s oldest flight simulator taking daring fliers soaring above the mountain scenery. Younger children will love the theme park’s whimsical rides, including the Ferris wheel and carousel, whilst parents will just be happy to relax in peace and take in the incredible views across Barcelona from 500 metres up the mountain. Whilst you’ll find restaurants here, we prefer grabbing a picnic of Spanish signature treats and tucking in at the picnic area, the whole city of Barcelona stretched out before you.
Family-Friendly Excursions – Siam Park – Tenerife
This Thai-inspired water world of Siam Park is arguably one of the best in Europe.
Attractions vary from the tame Sea Lion Island and steady tubing along the Mai Tai River, to the bone-shaking Mekong Rapids and the lengthy Jungle Snake Flume. Absolute daredevils will soon be in line to experience Siam Park’s signature feature, the Tower of Power; a 28 metre water slide plunging into the waters below. The Dragon and The Volcano are equally as terrifying as their names suggest, and a highlight of the day is sliding through the acrylic tubes that wind their way through shark filled waters.
Family-Friendly Excursions – Jeep Safari – Ibiza
A Jeep safari in Ibiza tends to generate a combination of terrified screams and excited squeals, and is a great option for families taking older kids to the White Isle.
Take your seat in an all-terrain Jeep for a tour of the island’s rockiest terrain, which only a 4×4 can negotiate, multilingual guides providing a humorous commentary as you travel around the island.
From dirt tracks to pine forests, and mountain terrain overlooking the Ibizan coastline; if you’re looking for something different to the usual pools and water parks, a 4×4 Jeep safari is an awesome alternative.
