We recently spent a little time in Bergen, Norway’s second largest city, before boarding a Hurtigruten cruise to the Norwegian Fjords. Little did we know that we’d actually see some of Norway’s best scenery before we had even set foot on the ship.
The Fløibanen Funicular is just a ten minute walk from where your cruise ship docks in Bergen and takes less than 8 minutes to transport you to the peak of Mount Fløyen, one of Bergen’s most famous mountains.
At 320m above sea level, Mount Fløyen offers some of the best views in Norway. Take the Fløibanen Funicular to its peak on a clear day and you’ll be rewarded with stunning views over Bergen, the surrounding islands and into the North Sea. Arrive early enough to take in the views before catching the sunset or allow yourself enough time to venture into the woods.
Mount Fløyen is home to woodland walks, lakes and mountain scenery, making for a long afternoon of exploring. Refuel at Fløien Folkerestaurant, which has stood at the top of Mount Fløyen since 1925. Floor-to-ceiling windows mean you can continue to appreciate the views while you dine, either on simple but delicious café fare or a la carte dinners created from quality local produce.
You can opt to walk back down the mountain into Bergen if you’re feeling fit; the hike will take around 45 minutes and isn’t for the faint hearted but the views along the way certainly make it worth your while. If that sounds a little too much like hard work, a return ticket for the Fløibanen Funicular costs NOK 90.00. If you’re spending time in Bergen before embarking on a cruise of the Norwegian Fjords, consider investing in a Bergen Card. Costing from NOK 240 (about £20) for a 24 hour pass, the Bergen Card will save you money on attractions, museums, restaurants and transport, including unlimited rides on the Fløibanen Funicular.
