It all began 50 years ago with just a single ship and a cruise to Mexico. Today, Princess Cruises take you to every corner of the world aboard a fleet of 18 cruise ships. Here, we celebrate 50 years of a cruise line that has changed the face of the cruise industry.
A Sparkling History
Fifty years ago, in 1965, company founder Stanley B McDonald founded Princess Cruises with the charter of a single ship; Princess Patricia set sail to Mexico on 3rd December.
Between then and now, Princess Cruises has developed its fleet and facilities to pioneer many industry firsts and revolutionise cruise holidays. 1977 saw the launch of immensely popular TV series ‘The Love Boat’. Filmed aboard Pacific Princess, the series was one of the highest-rated prime-time TV series’ of all time, introducing people around the world to the concept of cruising and leading to a dramatic expansion of the industry. The show ran for ten years and led to Princess Cruises becoming a household name across the world.
The Love Boat’s cast have reunited with Princess Cruises twice since the series ended; christening Dawn Princess in 1997 and again in November 2014, for the 50th anniversary celebration and star-studded launch of the Regal Princess.
The Most Glamorous of Godmothers
Throughout the years, ships have been inducted into the Princess Cruises fleet by some of the most esteemed and glamorous women in the world, including;
» Diana, Princess of Wales (Royal Princess – 1984)
» Audrey Hepburn (Star Princess – 1989)
