For every bit Quantum of the Seas may be technological, it is also incredibly good fun, and we had no idea just how exciting the facilities would be.
From the moment you step aboard there is a real fun atmosphere, from the modern art throughout the ship (2,980 pieces to be precise), to the 30ft magenta polar bear standing guard beside the climbing wall on deck 16; this is a seriously cool ship.
Elevating guests 300ft above sea level, the North Star really is a sight to behold and it really was as amazing as we expected it to be. Some may question just how varied a view you could possibly have when in the middle of the ocean, but just the sight of the ship itself stretched out beneath you is truly amazing. Add to this the spectacular views as you enter the world’s ports, and the opportunity to witness breathtaking sunsets, and there is little wonder the North Star is being touted as revolutionary within the industry.
Located at the aft of the ship, the 23ft chamber of the RipCord by iFLY skydiving simulator features upflowing winds of over 100 miles per hour and views over the Flowrider surf machine.
After attending a safety briefing and being kitted out in overalls, helmets and goggles, we headed out for what was to be an incredible experience. Instructors lead the way as you ‘freefall’ inside the chamber, the wind in your face and the sea in your sights.
SeaPlex is the largest and most ground-breaking entertainment complex at sea and we saw the huge space used for a variety of activities across the weekend, from dodgems to roller skating, all while a DJ spins tunes from his very own North Star that hovers above the action on a mechanical arm.
Feeling particularly brave after trying out the Ripcord iFLY earlier in the day, a couple of the Bolsover Cruise Club team decided to enrol in the circus school and try the art of trapeze, which involved swinging from a small elevated stage 24ft above the ground – another first at sea!
Early evening enticed us to the impressive Royal Theatre where we had booked to see the Abba inspired show; Mama Mia – we decided against the white flares and platform shoes but had a great time nonetheless!
Prior to the show, the Entertainments Manager briefly spoke to the audience about his determination at recreating the stage show to the exact specifications of the West End and Broadway performances that went before it, with the cast on board Quantum of the Seas even having been suggested as the best that has ever performed the show, both on land and at sea. The show lived up to the hype, the performers and the full orchestra both equally as talented.
Live music in the Music Hall attracted the crowds to the dance floor on both nights, the plush velvet seating and crystal chandeliers making for a luxurious venue in which to dance the night away with a cocktail in hand.
Staterooms on board Quantum of the Seas are just as impressive as all other areas of the ship, and though we didn’t have the opportunity to look at all cabin layouts, those we did see were spacious, airy and comfortable. Contemporary touches and luxury fabrics added a boutique hotel feel, while our Superior Ocean View Stateroom with Balcony benefited from a spacious balcony area that really opened the room up even further.
Storage space was more than adequate for even the longest of trips and there was plenty of room to tuck suitcases beneath the bed until home time.
At £20,000 per person for the first two guests, and £15,000 per person for additional guests, the beautiful Royal Loft Suite certainly comes at a premium, however it lends a whole new meaning to the phrase ‘travelling in style’. Almost as impressive were the Grand Suite and Junior Suite; scaled down versions of the Royal Loft but with the same designer touches and slightly smaller price tags.
After months of speculation, we expected Quantum of the Seas to be amazing. However, it is difficult to describe just how incredible the ship is.
Young or old, there really is something for everyone, with luxury, fun, innovation and outstanding service collaborating to create a truly fantastic experience. We can’t wait to return!
