There’s no worse feeling than returning home after a cruise to find that all those wonderful life changing services have disappeared and your back to having to find your own way again. If you’re like me then you struggle to get back into the swing of things when you return. A land based holiday can be hard enough to readjust from but such is the luxury of cruise holidays, returning back to home to find that you actually have to make your own bed can be such a chore!
We often return from a cruise and sink in our chairs as we realise that dinner needs to be cooked and will not be cooked for us, the bed will need to be made, drinks will require us fetching our own and there is now only a bath to laze in rather than a hot tub. I often wonder how these simple factors have all of a sudden become such grand tasks, after all I managed fine before I went on the cruise so why should it be so different when I return, this is the real testament to cruising. It’s so relaxing and indulgent that when you return you’ve almost forgot how to live your life. Being taken care of for the duration of your cruise really does hit home when you arrive back and you realise just how well you were looked after on board and how hard the fabulous crews on board work.
Are you the same as me? Understand what I mean? If not, let me talk you through it. We wake up in the morning on board our cruise ship and we simply stroll into the bathroom for a shower as we take our time to let the morning sink in and enjoy a relaxing wake up. There is no alarm here for getting up for work and when you step out of the shower all that we need to do is put the towel we have used back into the shower for our cabin steward to realise we wish for new towels. At home, this is just not the case is it? We wake up at the sound of the alarm, we jump into the shower on a mission to get ready in time and following getting out of the shower we cannot just leave our towel back in the shower as when we get home from work it will still be waiting for us, there is no cabin steward here! Following getting ready in the morning, the next step is to head downstairs for the next stage of the morning, breakfast. By now it’s sunk in a little more that you are no longer on holiday. You arrive in the kitchen to find there is no table waiting all laid out for you, no menu to be looked over, no prepared tea or coffee on the table and no smiling waiters ready to cater for our every need. All we see is a cupboard with a range of cereal to choose from that now requires us to get our own milk from the fridge, what has life become!
We go to work and on our return we arrive home to be greeted by yet another distinct realisation that the cruise is well and truly over. Fine dining on board is now a thing of the past as we realise that although prior to the cruise we would have happily come home from work to prepare a meal, we now long for the joy of the lunchtime buffet and its ever so simple flow with an amazing selection of food to choose from and the fantastic evening meals spread over a vast amount of courses opposed to the one meal you will prepare tonight, there is no sorbet or selection of exquisite desserts here, it’s just what we have in the fridge.
Now for the evening, it’s been a long day and all we want to do is relax, head for the theatre, take in a show, perhaps enjoy a few drinks in one of the bars on board but oh wait, it’s over, you’re at home and the evening has sunk into the realms of what the television may provide or if you’re feeling adventurous perhaps a trip to the local pub, it’s not quite the same is it?
As the night draws to a close we make our way back upstairs ready to get some rest before we start all over again but instead of arriving into the bedroom to find the luxurious cruise line beds we have had the pleasure of, we are now at home and must settle for something we love but not quite as comfortable, even more so, there is certainly not a chocolate waiting for you on your pillow, which really tops it off! It’s at this precise moment that we really understand what we’ve experienced. A cruise is nothing short of amazing and now that it’s over the time has come again for us to fend for ourselves, after all there’s nothing like being at home, it’s wonderful isn’t it!!
This is my own experience of a post cruise reality check and one that I’m sure is shared with many of our passengers. For those out there that are about to head off aboard another exciting cruise then I wish you the happiest of holidays and remind you to savor it all. Think of the rest of us when you are struggling to get to grips with life once again after you return as we have all been there and all hope to be there again many more times in the future, let’s face it, there is nothing quite like a cruise!
