There’s a buzz around the office lately and it’s all because the arrival of the Royal Princess continues to get closer. Bolsover Cruise Club staff have been invited to attend the agents preview and naming ceremony of the new ship and we cannot wait to get on board and see first-hand what Princess Cruises have been up to.
When she arrives in Southampton the ship will certainly attract a lot of attention due to her remarkable stature and facilities. The ship is due to arrive in June this year and her striking features include an incredible atrium and piazza design along with a state of the art SeaWalk spanning out over the water from the ship’s upper deck. We have covered the arrival of this new cruising sensation many times in our news and blog coverage to keep you up to date with her progress but we thought this would be the ideal time to take a look at some of the lesser known facts about this stunning cruise ship. She boasts many unique innovations that have escaped the notice of many excited cruise enthusiasts and when you know more, you will be even more excited about the arrival of this super ship.
The myriad of innovations include features such as original entertainment presentations, taste bud pleasing dining options, outstanding technological advancements and much more.
“This list points to the numerous large and small features that we’re introducing with our new ship,” said Jan Swartz, Princess executive vice president. “The combination of exciting new hardware and software touches is the essence of Royal Princess.”
There are many things you may not know about the Royal Princess so let’s take a closer look.
A major accommodation technological advancement has been made on board so that all staterooms will receive a brand new on-demand programming entertainment system. This is a new generation of in-room entertainment for Princess Cruises and will be debuted aboard their new ship. The innovations include an array of on-demand movies and other programming features including television shows and music. The movie choices will include hundreds of options from the latest Hollywood classics to timeless classics. Contemporary, up to date, television shows will be available to choose from along with the movie selections all at no charge to passengers whatsoever. The new in-cabin entertainment systems will also feature a live feed into the new venue on board the Royal Princess known as Princess Live! This brilliant venue will host a range of on board shows for passengers to watch live at the studio or take in from the comfort of their own stateroom.
Continuing with accommodation advancements, all guests travelling in suite accommodation will for the very first time on a Princess ship, have access to a full range of services and relaxation areas, exclusively to them. A team of dedicated staff will assist guests in this area with anything they may need including shore excursion bookings and queries, speciality dining room table reservations, Lotus Spa bookings and much more. The venue will also be used as a designated disembarkation lounge for suite passengers when getting ready to depart the ship.
Entertainment innovations continue at the theatre on board where four brand new production shows will be rolled out and debuted for the first time on the Royal Princess. These four shows have purposely been designed for Royal Princess passengers and include “Colors of the World,” an experiential journey through the destinations visited by Princess ships; “Spectacular!” a colorful music extravaganza; “Sweet Soul Music,” a tribute to rhythm and blues; and “What the World Needs Now,” an elegant show celebrating the music and style of the ‘60s.
Art lovers will relish the brand new installation on board by famous marine artist; Wyland. These custom art works showcase dramatic features inspired by the sea and will be viewable at the peak of the ship on the top deck. It is during the naming ceremony and inaugural celebrations that these artworks will be revealed.
A mobile tour will be available for passengers to navigate the many art and architectural features on board. This brand new feature is a self-guided tour enabling guests to meander the on board art collection at their own pace using their very own smart phone or tablet devices. The tours can be stopped and started at any time throughout the cruise for you to explore whenever the mood strikes you.
The bars and lounges on board all look fantastic in design and the new innovations here are also extremely clever and exciting. We’re sure one of the most popular bar attractions on board will be the newly announced flair bartending display at the SeaView Bar situated on the top deck of the ship. The shows will take place at sunset each evening and will no doubt entertain guests will an impressive range of mixing skills and bottle tossing between crew members.
Newly announced bar entertainment features continue at the Wheelhouse Bar where guests are invited to sample a variety of whiskeys. The bar will boast a menu of three different whiskey flights including single malts, three “Glens” and other sumptuous whiskey choices. The Wheelhouse Bar will also be a popular venue due to the pub lunch service that will take place every day throughout each cruise. This was previously available on other ships but just on selected days each cruise but will be a daily event on board Royal Princess. A traditional pub lunch will be served here including fish and chips and ploughman’s lunches along with brand new Princess signature brews.
The Royal Princess will showcase the largest complimentary pizza restaurant at sea known as Alfredo’s Pizzeria. The concept has been a passenger favorite on several Princess ships but the Royal Princess will take it to the next level boasting an impressive 121 seats at the dining venue offering an expansive menu of freshly prepared pizzas, calzones and baked pasta dishes.
Another sensational addition to the ship will be perfect for passengers with a sweet tooth. The Royal Princess will have the largest gelato menu at sea at the ships dedicated gelateria. The largest variety of Italian inspired gelato and ice cream will include innovative creations alongside traditional favorites such as vanilla and chocolate. Gelato will feature a menu of eight delicious flavors prepared by the ship’s pastry chef, plus more than 20 toppings and sauces, and specialty items such as sundaes, waffle cones and sweet crepes.
As well as cuisine, the wine menus on board are certain to attract a lot of interest. Royal Princess will boast the largest collection of super Tuscan wines ever to be selected at sea. Sabatini’s, the Italian restaurant on board will offer more than 20 choices of the headline wines on board including everything from Masseto, Solaia or Tignanello to some lesser known vintages such as Castello del Terricio ‘Cappuanino’ or Il Bruciato Bolgheri. There will even be wine tasting events held on board for passengers to sample the selections.
Passengers often say to use that they use to get highly frustrated with internet access and facilities on board many ships. In recent years there has been a dramatic improvement on mobile phone and tablet services on board due to the increasing demand and Royal Princess will be no exception. Princess Cruises will roll out a brand new service on board known as [email protected] The new mobile friendly intranet site will give passengers the opportunity to easily access the ships entertainment updates as well as special offers on board at the dining venues and duty free shops. Port news and weather updates will be included on the intranet site as well without the need of having to wait for your daily newspaper to be delivered each evening to your stateroom. This clever innovation is sure to please many guests on board and offer a revolutionary service for passengers to keep up to date with all things happening on board; now you’ll never have to miss a thing.
As for technological advancements, another great attraction that has received rave reviews throughout the Princess fleet is the Movie’s Under the Stars outdoor cinema screen. Princess Cruises were the first to introduce this al fresco way of going to the movies and the line reaped the rewards with passengers loving the new concept, especially with a tub of popcorn and a nice warm blanked to wrap up in. As with many things, Royal Princess will again take this to the next level and introduce the largest outdoor movie screen at sea. The screen on board will be an impressive 30% larger than any other current Princess screen in the fleet.
If your someone who loves having their photograph taken, especially when on holiday to capture a memory then you are going to love the new photo finder system on board this ship. The Royal Princess will feature brand new touch screen technology to find your photos taken by the professional photographers on board along with state of the art facial recognition software. The photo centre on board will have digital kiosks alongside the photography crew to assist guests in finding their photos quicker and easier than ever before. The new facial recognition software will capture your face and immediately begin finding photos to match, making it so simple. From then on, when you find your photos you will be able to save your favorites, customise prints to how you would like them to be and choose between a range of special purchase options once completed.
The pool areas are certain to be a major attraction on board. Of course pool areas, when under the glistening sun lit skies of the Mediterranean and Caribbean are always a major draw for passengers but the Royal Princess once more adds something truly different to the experience. The ship’s central pool area will offer daily and nightly themed water performances in varied sequences. Sound confusing? No problem, let us clear it up, this fantastic feature will comprise of dancing fountains, specially selected background music and live performers to create a unique top deck show.
Last but by no means least, one of the most intriguing and excellent features this ship boasts is it’s remarkable green technology. The Royal Princess will become Princess’s greenest vessel including efficient hull and propeller design, which requires as little energy as the lines smaller ships to run. The aim was to drastically reduce carbon emissions and they have certainly achieved this. The air conditioning system will go against the usual centralised system and instead offer unique, individual fan coil units to save energy and there will also be low energy lighting used throughout the ship with a complete emphasis on LED.
