The luscious waters of the Mediterranean make for an inviting voyage, with sizzling heat and sun kissed destinations giving the region a sparkling reputation. But one of the highlights of a Mediterranean cruise holiday is that every night you can witness some of the most beautiful sunsets in the world. Whether watching at sea out on open deck or sat in a bar on the waterfront of an exciting city, cruise holidays allow you a glimpse at some remarkable twilights.
The Mediterranean hugs the coastlines of several continents, including Europe, Africa and Asia. As a result, you can experience fantastic sunsets on these waters whether exploring the mainland of Europe or heading further afield. The ancient walls of Dubrovnik make a stunning setting for a Croatian sunset that you won’t forget. Walk over to the old town or head to one of the pebbly beaches to watch the glowing ball of light descend over the Mediterranean. There are plenty of lounges and cafes where you can grab a drink to watch the sun go down, and be sure to bring your camera to get a unique snapshot of the iconic walls at dusk.
Beyond its natural charms, there are plenty of things to do in Dubrovnik if your cruise heads here on its itinerary. Learn about the past of this historic city up at the Fortress (which is also a good spot for sunset!) and find some souvenirs in the quaint shops that scatter the old town. If you’re feeling peckish, the fresh local seafood dishes are a delightful snack for any time of day.

A vibrant island with gorgeous food, idyllic scenery and famous nightlife, Mykonos has plenty to offer to those taking a cruise to the Greek islands. Dusk is the best time to capture those Kodak moments with the flattering light, so explore the backstreets of this whitewashed place to get some iconic photos and discover the hidden charms of the island. Alternatively, Little Venice is renowned to be one of the best places for watching the sun descend over the Med. Having said this, you won’t be disappointed wherever you base yourself to watch this magical spectacle.

Fusing the influences of Europe and Asia into one intriguing city, Istanbul is like no other place that you’ll visit. Hectic markets combine with pretty squares and gardens, city thrills contrast with fishermen on the waterfront, nightlife is set against the religious monuments that scatter the city. However one of the best times to experience and understand what makes Istanbul so unique is at sunset.
As day turns to night you can see the skyline come to life, with mosques, skyscrapers and the iconic Bosphorus offering so many photo opportunities for its visitor. If your cruise ship is docked in port overnight then take a boat trip by the river or find a rooftop bar to enjoy Turkish tea or an Efes beer as the evening sets in. After a long day exploring the city sights such as the Blue Mosque and the Grand Bazaar, there’s no better way to end a visit to Istanbul.

4. St Tropez
You might associate sunset in St Tropez with a famous book by Danielle Steel, but in real life there’s truth in the name about this luxurious French resort. This glitzy town really sparkles under the glow of the setting sun, and visitors are spoilt for choice with places to watch it. Lounge with a cocktail in a waterfront bar or wander the old harbour of La Citadelle depending on your taste, and remember to take photos to treasure the moment.
After sunset, the squares and cobbled streets light up with activity, and you’ll find bars, shops, restaurants and even galleries open late to make the most of your stop off in St Tropez. If your idea of cruise holiday involves a little glamour, this is the ideal destination for a trip to the Mediterranean.

Once home to the biggest empire in the world, Venice is a fascinating city to visit on any cruise of the Mediterranean. It also happens to boast some of the most wonderful sunsets that money can’t buy… well unless you happen to book a cruise holiday that includes it in the itinerary. What makes the sunsets in Venice so magnificent is the unique landscape of the city. Whilst most destinations feature a beach as the waterfront, this entire city is based on the water. Wander squares and streets that line the lagoon and see the sun descend over the Grand Canal as you sit in a café or cross one of the many historical bridges.
For an unforgettable experience, take a gondola ride at sunset and get some incredible pictures with you and your loved one. It’s perhaps the most romantic place to watch the sunset in the world if you’re going on a couple’s cruise holiday.
With so much activity and sightseeing to fill your days, relaxing with a drink and a few nibbles as you watch the sunset is renowned to be a highlight of any cruise trip. The beauty of a cruise holiday is that you get to witness the different shades and settings of sunsets in a new destination every day.
