Luxury to 3rd World in the Length of a Gangway
Sue | July 9, 2014 | Cunard | Queen Elizabeth
As always with Cunard, the condition, cleanliness and service were of a high standard. I feel that Queen Elizabeth is not a happy ship, and felt that even more this time. There’s just no jollity from the officers (with the exception of the Deputy Captain) and that trickles down to the crew, so the atmosphere was very flat.
However, Southampton Port is getting worse. It took over 3 hours for my cases to arrive at my room when I embarked, despite having priority embarkation.
On disembarkation day, Southampton Council had decided to do roadworks (there were 3 ships in the port on turn-round that day). Roads were closed so the coaches were late arriving, which held up disembarkation. When I eventually left the ship, there were no trollies to be had anywhere in the luggage re-claim. I joined the queue – being the only woman in it – and was nearly trampled in the stampede by the ‘gentlemen’ when a few trollies did eventually appear.
The staff at the car key retrieval desk were stressed and curt and there was no signage to the car park. I eventually found my car, loaded my cases and had to sit there for one and a quarter hours because the whole dock area was gridlocked. My journey home took over 9 hours, instead of the usual 4.5.
I’m beginning to wonder if cruising is worth it any more, especially from Southampton.
To cap all this, some considerate soul had taken a very bad chest cold on board and lots of passengers were coughing and sneezing by the end of the first week – myself included, so I spent two days of my holiday in bed.
I think I need a holiday!
