Very disappointed with Cunard
Jill Burrage | January 1, 2023 | Cunard | Queen Victoria
I have always viewed Cunard as amongst the top of the list of cruise companies that offer first-class service and was excited to introduce our friends on their first five-star cruise – sadly that was not to be. The first disappointment was to be informed that one of our favourite ports was being cancelled in favour of 2 days in Cadiz with no explanation of why – the reason however became apparent as soon as we set sail. As well-seasoned cruisers we expect weather conditions to affect our comfort, however, the type of uneven rocking along with continuous loud banging and creaking was out of character and not only caused sickness but also lack of sleep. Expecting to be told we had sailed through a gale force storm we were surprised to find sailing conditions were quite calm. After a second sleepless night, we reported our concerns to an officer on our deck who assured us it would be addressed. Sadly nothing changed and it was only on our third day aboard that we learned there was actually a problem with a propellor blade which needed replacing (a fault it seemed was known to Cunard long before we sailed) and was due to be replaced on our two day stop in Cadiz. Being in a cabin at the aft of the ship meant that we, more than most, suffered from the uncomfortable effects of this problematic blade. Unfortunately, the two day stop in Cadiz was unsuccessful as divers could not do the repairs and so we sailed on in discomfort and more sleepless nights. Thankfully, in the next port, some reparation work was achieved although a full repair was not possible. Things became more bearable but by now we had suffered five days of discomfort on our expected luxury cruise with no apology, no offer to be moved and no explanation. It was such a disappointment as everything else about the cruise was top class – the staff, the food (which sadly I couldn’t enjoy for those first five days……. (Except for the constant supply of green apples sourced by our wonderful waiters) the entertainment and the sumptuous surroundings.
Despite voicing and writing my concerns whilst onboard nothing was offered to alleviate our suffering. We and our friends have arrived home with mixed feelings but mostly with the view that Cunard let us down and we would be most reluctant to sail with them again.
