A ‘new’ ship from Fred Olsen
Shelagh Levett | December 13, 2021 | Fred Olsen Cruise Lines | Bolette
We were keen to see the ‘new’ ship Bolette – previously Holland America’s Amsterdam – and weren’t disappointed. We did a short break of 4 nights which is ample time to get to know the ship. Whilst the ship is new to FOCL, it is dated and a bit rough in places – only a minor refurb being carried out to give it the Fred Olsen look. Much of the decor, furnishings, art work etc is left over from HAL. However, it is a lovely ship and quite different to the two ships that have left the FOCL fleet. There is a proper theatre with a balcony, 2 swimming pools one of which is covered by a retractable roof – a first for FOCL I believe. But it is the staff that sets FOCL apart. They are genuinely friendly and helpful. Having recently been on Iona and felt the staff provided excellent service, I must say I had forgotten just how wonderful the FOCL crew are and it does leave the P&O crew somewhat lacking! The ship was only half full (600 passengers), but it did seem that there was a full complement of crew with waiters on hand in the buffet to carry your tray. Food is tasty with good choice and variety. We ate one night in the free Vasco’s restaurant which has a Goan theme and is thoroughly recommended. Prices for drinks were cheaper than on P&O and service in the bars was also excellent. We were in a premier suite which whilst not as large as premiers on Balmoral, was very nice. It even had a jacuzzi bath. I counted 15 drawers and 9 cupboards as well as 4 wardrobes, so plenty of storage for even long cruises. There are plenty of public rooms and the ship feels very spacious. Even with a full quota of passengers we don’t think it will be crowded. We can’t wait to get back on board.
