1st P&O Caribbean Cruise
John Raeburn | June 14, 2014 | P&O Cruises | Azura
Here is the 1st review of our recent cruise with P&O last month on Azura. 1st impressions were good as we have been on a number of cruises with Thompson to the Med and this was our first big cruise to the Caribbean.
Our cabin was lovely with outside view, the only issue we had with our cabin was that we didn’t have any cold water on the sink for the duration of cruise. We reported this to reception twice and nothing was done first time, when someone did finally come to look at the issue. We were told by the maintenance engineer that this was due to the weather being hot ! and our friends in the next cabin had warm water also, but others we spoke to had cold water, So we had to use bottled water to clean our teeth.
The ports were lovely that we visited each day and the trips we booked with P&O were good also so no issues with these. On the days we didn’t have a trip booked were just as good on shore and the whole experience on the Caribbean was a lovely relaxing atmosphere.
Regarding the restaurants on board we found a few issues with these firstly the service in the evenings for freedom dining the waiters weren’t very friendly when serving us or spent time talking to us. We found the waiters on Thompsons ships far more friendly and you could have laugh and joke with the waiters. The Venezia restaurant you could never get fruit juice after breakfast finished or during the main part of the day in the self service restaurant. We found evening dining in the Venezia was very basic it felt like you were dining in a glorified caf?? just like lunch times but this could easily be changed for the evenings by adding table clothes and a small flower arrangement or candles to make it feel like you were actually in a nice restaurant
P & O expect you to dress up in the evenings but would you dress up to have dinner in a cafe!! no i wouldn’t . We went for dinner in the Verona only once, I my wife has an intolerance to Lactose so has to avoid Dairy foods as much as she can and because of this she was made to feel like she was a nuisance she had the Tuna which was lovely but when it came to dessert She asked for Dairy free ice cream only to be told they didn’t have any when she said I had it in the main restaurant she was told it would take to long to get it she then asked for soya milk or lactose free milk for her coffee and was told the same that they didn’t have any. She asked the head waiter if she could request a dairy free gluten free spaghetti bolognese for the following evening and was basically told NO I went to reception with the complaint and they said they would speak to someone but i never heard another word about it obviously I was just a number to them, I feel a company as big as P & O should cater for all peoples intolerances they can cater for Vegetarians so why not Dairy free and gluten free why should you have to specifically ask for a meal to be made for you it should already be available on the menu and in the buffet all foods should be labeled to say if they contain dairy, gluten, Wheat or nuts if other ships can do it then I am sure P & O can.
We got fed up with never being able to find a table in the buffet at lunch times and not all the food stations were open at once so the ones that were open became overcrowded. Entertainment was poor not a patch on Thomson cruises. Food on the second week was much better than the first week , Apart from that our Cabin was nice, destinations lovely and overall all it was a good Holiday but unless P & O start catering for people with Intolerances I shall have to think about sailing with them again.
