Caribbean & USA cruise
Mr George Stevens | November 24, 2013 | P&O Cruises | Ventura
Ventura in need of upgrading. Cabin not very good. Furniture was threadbare and there was a dip in the floor at the end of the bed. Mattresses uncomfortable although cabin steward did his best to keep it clean and tidy. Also, there were head stains on the headboard which appeared to need a good clean. From day one there was a piece of paper lying on the floor outside the lifts on deck 12 and days later the same piece of paper was still there. The stair rails were never cleaned, which was done on previous P&O cruises. There was no small tray of sweets on the cabin table. Lack of staff in the outside decks of the buffet restaurant to collect dirty pots etc. Only one staff on duty outside to collect dirty pots etc, on occasions there would be two. I had to take away dirty pots from a table in order to sit at that table. There were several staff inside the buffet restaurant who all appeared to be rushed off their feet, as were the staff in the other bar areas. One begs the question, has there been cutbacks in staff as it was noticed that cabin stewards had more cabins to clean. Overall cleanliness of the dining rooms we used was satisfactory.
The contents of the meals in the main restaurant (Baytree) were repetitive. Green beans and peas with almost every meal. Food quality was good.
Far too many formal nights (10) where one per week would be sufficient. with regards the main dining rooms (again Baytree) the management need to look at the opening times of the restaurant, First sitting 6-30pm on evening casual nights the restaurant was opened at 6-20pm to allow people including wheelchair users time to enter and be seated. On formal nights the restaurant opened at 6-30pm bang on, which created mass congestion in the foyer area and queuing on the stairs and people including wheelchair users had nowhere to go. This needs to be looked at.
The poolside entertainment was poor in the daytime although the general entertainment on the ship was good in the main theatre. Having said that the Havana room was a poor venue because if you sat at the back then you could not see the stage area except for TV screens dotted about the venue plus it was also very cold. All the comedians on the ship labelled it the Meerkat Lounge. This venue definitely needs to be looked at.
Ports of call were good although we found New Orleans to be a letdown, This was the first port of call in the USA and a one to one had to be done with immigration which meant we were in a very long queue and it took us 5 hours before we could go ashore. Some people didn’t get off the ship until 4pm. Not very good at all and not impressed with New Orleans in general. The Mississippi Boat ride was also poor.
Other ports of call were good with the exception of Montego Bay. From what I saw, not many people ventured far from the cruise terminal mainly because of the state of emergency that had been declared some 2 to 3 weeks prior to the cruise. It appeared that the authorities did little to give confidence to me and my travelling companions of safety whilst ashore. No doubt many people also felt this way.
Our overall experience of this particular cruise was that it was a 3-star standard and not one of our better cruises and we certainly will not be doing this cruise again. It seemed to us that standards had dropped from our last cruise on Azura in 2017.
