What promised to be an exciting cruise turned out to be a disaster. The flight from Gatwick to Genoa was on time but both my wife and I have mobility problems and the walk from plane to coach was very long with no assistance available. Equally the walk from coach to ship was long and no assistance available, no P&O reps present, until almost at the ship when two Italian assistants were extremely helpful. Apparently, crew members went ashore at Naples and contracted gastro-enteritis which spread through the ship. My wife and I, plus our 5 year old grandson were all affected. We are careful over using gel each time we visited an eating area and are veteran P&O cruisers so are aware of the threats. However this strain was very vigorous and resulted in me being put ashore at Venice for medical teatment. At the time I understand over 40 cabins were affected – but medical staff would not confirm it. My wife and grandson were confined to the cabin for almost the whole of the cruise.
The cause? I think lower standards particularly in the buffet areas. Tables were given a cursory rub over, glasses and cups were constantly out of supply. I have never seen so many chipped/ cracked glasses on board but they were being used because no others were available.
Very disappointing. I never thought I would have to record a review like this. It is not just our illness, but the lowering of standards had a contributory effect. The itinerary was good, weather was perfect but we could not enjoy it. As my wife says, the best cruise we never had!
