Value for money only if you are on the Elite tier!

This was our second trip on a Princess, our first being in2004 so quite a long gap.As we had been on several P and O ships,we were promoted to Elite which is the top loyalty tier. You need to have done at least 15 Carnival cruises within a certain time frame. With Elite you get many benefits such as free internet, shoe shining, free laundry and pressing, priority embarkation and disembarkstion and even a fast track queue at customer services! However if you are further down the loyalty tier or a first timer, the ship can be quite expensive. The drinks package has an 18% service charge added and you really need to be at the bar all day to get your money’s worth. Also if you have few days at sea then you are spending your money ashore and not in the ships bars. There were a small number of diehards who did not go ashore, simply to make sure they got their quota.Drinks are recorded and once you reach 15 in any one day, you then pay.Lots of people ignored the protocol for formal nights and were allowed into the restaurants in casual clothes. This was the fault of the staff;they should have refused these people entry and told them to go to the other eateries which allow casual clothes. Our steward Zaldi was a bit distant and we got the impression there was no point in interacting with us as we were only there for one week. Our stateroom, club class suite was very comfortable and Zaldi serviced it well.Laundry and pressing was of a very high standard and the self service laundrettes were excellent although you pay $3 to use the machine and another$3 to use the drier.Food in all restaurants was very good and we enjoyed the Santa Fe restaurant.Sabattinis was ok but not worth the $30 cover charge.Did not get a chance to use the Sanctuary $20 per half day! As weather was bad but it looked really luxurious and I think I may well have paid the fee to sample it just once. All staff very friendly and attentive especially Freddie in Crooners. If we went on Princess again,I would not bother with the drinks package as we worked out it was cheaper to buy our own and apparently you can have the 18% service charge removed but you would need to check on that one.Lovely ship, great food.attentive staff overall just very expensive on board!! (Unless you are on Elite tier)
