Balmoral is Fred Olsen’s largest cruise ship, yet still small enough to navigate the small waterways of the Kiel Canal and retains the intimate and friendly atmosphere that the Fred. Olsen fleet is renowned for.

Missed several ports. Some due to mechanical problems. But others were because ship was incapable of meeting schedule in anything but a calm sea. Poor planning? Poor communication with passengers on the delays and missed ports. In fact poor communications on nornal day to day events too. I won’t be cruising with Fred Olsen again any time soon.

62 nights California Mexico and Panama Canal

Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines | Balmoral Reviews

Fantastic cruise and itinerary, Fred Olsen knows how to look after his passengers, especially the entertainments dept who worked so hard, led by Elliott Taylor. A fantastic job despite having circa 30% itinerary changes (significant) due to getting caught in a fishing line which resulted in repairs at San Diego for 3 days. After repairs, the Balmoral did not seem to cope in terms of speed with bad weather. If the crossing across the Atlantic...

Christmas on Balmoral

Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines | Balmoral Reviews

Embarkation was good so thought we were in for a good cruise – wrong. Christmas Eve was good with carol service with the staff followed by port, sherry and mince pies. Christmas morning was most enjoyable with reindeer racing with senior officers and deck party with mulled wine. Then downhill. Christmas evening meal consisted of plenty of turkey, one sprout cut in half, no parsnip, carrot or stuffing. My husband had thin slice of parsnip...

Mystery Cruise

Disappointed to learn during the cruise that formal evenings were mandatory dress. Had we known this we would not have booked. The attitude of the head waiter was pretty poor. We were on second sitting, (we did not request this) and because we were refused entry to the restaurant, we only had 20 minutes to eat at the cafe. On making a formal complaint the following morning, ( there was no one available at the...

Good value for money

This was our first cruise with Fred Olsen. We had a premier suite which was really lovely. Decor throughout was excellent. Food overall was good but only ever 2 starter choices! Also if you opted to go to the Palms cafe for dinner, the food was very limited and often dried up or lukewarm. The cafe is way too small for the guests. People were bumping into one another everywhere and there was often a...

Thoroughly enjoyed our second cruise aboard Balmoral. This is a happy friendly ship with brilliant crew. We were not too impressed with Gothenburg but enjoyed our visits to Copenhagen, Tallin, Helsinki, St. Petersburg and Oslo. St. Petersburg was very busy so I can imagine that it is a nightmare to visit in the summer months. are some amazing cathedrals and waterways in St.Peterburg and it is worth the visit. The entertainment on board was again...

The staff were as usual very friendly and efficient. The weather was good with calm seas most days, The Captains in Cadiz day was especially good with a flamenco dance demonstration, fun games, music and the opportunity to visit the other three ships. We enjoyed all of our shore excursions.

We had a great holiday food, service ports of call all really enjoyable. Only set back was our newly refurbished interior cabin 8058 had a separate toilet Jack and Jill sinks and a shower cubicle at the expense of any real hanging space at all. When I asked the Manager to look for himself as he claimed not to understand what the problem was he agreed one narrow closet with no full length hanging space...

Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines | Balmoral Reviews

Just returned from our second cruise on Balmoral this summer, both trips to the Scottish Highlands and Islands with our teenage children. The best aspect of smaller ship cruising is the more personal service and attention you receive from the crew, something we have found lacking on other cruise lines with much larger ships. It is also nice to be able to sail much closer into destinations and to be able to get on and...

Wonderful time on the Balmoral ship. Everything was perfect. Even our seventeen-year-old granddaughter really enjoyed herself. Can’t wait to book another cruise. Norway was amazing.

Scottish Highlands and Islands ref L1826

Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines | Balmoral Reviews

Our first cruise with Fred Olsen. Public areas, the layout of the ship and level of service very good. Spey and Avon restaurants were quite special compared with Ballindalloch. Entertainment was good with now fairly rare live orchestra backing in the Neptune Lounge. The cabin was perfectly clean with excellent shower room and unobtrusive stewarding. Cabin no. was 5175, and we found the L-shape bed layout strange, the transverse one having no bedside table or...

Norway the easy way

Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines | Balmoral Reviews

We have been cruising for 10 years, but this was our first time with Fred Olsen. We chose our first cruise to Norway because of good reviews and an easy drive to Newcastle – only about 105 miles from our West Yorkshire home. The port experience was good, with easy car parking and speedy and efficient check-in. Our cabin was ready as soon as we boarded, about 14.30. Balmoral proved to be friendly, well maintained,...

Excellent but some flaws in the upgrading of this ship.
By Mrs Margaret Bonthrone on 04 June 2018
Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines | Balmoral Reviews

A brilliant cruise to the Swedish Waterways could not ask for better. A beautiful ship but no bar’s near to the restaurants, there is so much wasted space that could have been utilised when the ship was upgraded. In some of the bars, except the Neptune, the waiters were a little slow and would not take advice to make the service better, (like not leaving the lid off the tonic bottle so that the G&T...

Very good cruise in a very good ship. Our first cruise with Fred Olsen but would go with them again. We were not impressed with the Captain as he gave no reports of sights we were passing nothing to look out for as we were to understand we could have seen sea life plus we never saw him around the ship talking to his passengers on other ships we have always seen the captain around the...

Fantastic cruise to South America

Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines | Balmoral Reviews

We have just returned to the UK after a great cruise to South America on the Balmoral. The ship was wonderful, no complaints whatsoever. Entertainment was excellent, food was good, and crew ( cabin staff , entertainment team and dining room staff )were really friendly and efficient. I attended the craft class which was given by two fabulous women ( Christine and Hillary ), and the things we made were absolutely lovely. The Captain kept...

Mum’s first cruise

Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines | Balmoral Reviews

As the title suggests, this was mum’s first cruise at the age of 78. It was the 3 night River Seine Sojourn and gave her a good idea of what cruising entails. Despite a bumpier than expected crossing mum started to relax after dinner in the restaurant and was enthralled by the evening show – Bon voyage. The singers and dancers were full of energy and very talented, both shows were excellent. The comedian also...

Just returned from a lovely holiday on Balmoral cruising the Norwegian Fjords. We had not travelled with Fred Olsen previously but had a wonderful time. The decor is a little dated but that was the only criticism. The staff were amazing, very courteous and accommodating. The food better than I have experienced with other cruise lines of late. We had a superior suite which had a spacious balcony, absolutely perfect to while away an hour...

Worst cabin on the ship
By Susan Burton on 10 October 2017
Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines | Balmoral Reviews

I took a friend who had never cruised before on a taster weekend cruise on Balmoral, as it is one of the smaller ships, so that he would see how wonderful cruising was. Although I had booked a double room, we were given the smallest cabin set up as an L shape so much so that it could not be changed round. Needless to say it was awful. As the ship was apparently full, there...
