Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines Ship Review Balmoral Reviews

Balmoral is Fred Olsen’s largest cruise ship, yet still small enough to navigate the small waterways of the Kiel Canal and retains the intimate and friendly atmosphere that the Fred. Olsen fleet is renowned for.

Title: Norwegian Fjords Summary: I can’t fault Fred Olsen for the friendly, attentative staff who made my cruise a lovely experience. Nothing is too much trouble and they seem to enjoy working for Fred Olsen. The Balmoral is a lovely ship, quite traditional but a nice size and its an ideal ship to see the fjords as she can go all the way in so you can dock alongside the town in many places. The food is and entertainment...

Title: Five nights cruising the Seine in France Summary: First river cruise we have done. Check in was excellent. Food was excellent. Staff were well organised and polite in all public areas. But the cabin AWFUL No chance of getting any sleep when at sea at night. Noise from the engine very loud all night, I remember the sheer bliss of peace and quite when we docked at Dover. Had a good one hour of sleep before we woke up at 6.30 a.m. by...

Title: Five nights in France! Summary: Sailed from Dover which was a first for me. The check in was the quickest/easiest ever in 47 cruises! I had a very spacious inside cabin with a bath and shower. The staff were very friendly and nothing was too much trouble.I renewed my acquaintance with Suppoj in the Observatory bar.He was in there on my last cruise on Balmoral and he remembered me from 6 months previously. The food was excellent as was the service in...

Title: Introduction to Scandinavia Summary: The trip was in early September so the weather was not expected to be too good but it turned out better than anticipated. Check-in in Newcastle could have been better but it was OK. Staff were, as usual, superb and ere able to handle any problem. Accommodation was excellent. The ship was not full so plenty of room to sit and relax. First stop Oslo was a little disappointing and not helped by the rain....

Title: Norwegian Fjords on board Fred Olsen’s Balmoral Summary: My family and I have recently returned from a fantastic cruise with Fred Olsen on Balmoral. We booked car parking with Fred Olsen in Newcastle. The car park was a 2-minute walk from the check-in area. Cases were taken from the car park to the ship by Fred Olsen staff and we carried our hand luggage. The car parking was a very simple process and not a bad price at £10.50 per night. Staff were...

Title: A mixed experience Summary: A lovely ship, great public areas, but the cabin was never properly cleaned on the 9 days we were in the room. Food is lovely but in the main dining room it is child-size portions. If you are taking a fussy eater like my 85-year-old mother it’s difficult as not much in the way of simple food. The fish was all unrecognisable apart from when we had Plaice one day. Shows were excellent but little...

Title: Sunny Norwegian Fjords Summary: Our first time cruising, and probably won’t be our last. We went primarily to see the Fjords, rather than for a cruise. The weather was superb, which made the scenery magnificent. The ship was full, but for the most part, we were able to get where we wanted and sit where we wanted. The entertainment in the lounges was really good – just a pity that most people were using it as ‘musical wallpaper’, and...

Title: Fred Olsen Balmoral Summary: Still a super ship. We had a lovely holiday. But !! Two or three things not as good as last year. Embarking in Rosyth was a disaster with a computer failure. Gangways not really suitable for disabled people. Only 4 ports in 10 days First port was Malmo and the walk to the centre was about 2 miles, then when we got there the shops were closed ( A Saturday ) , I was most...

Title: California, Mexico and Panama Canal Summary: Missed several ports. Some due to mechanical problems. But others were because ship was incapable of meeting schedule in anything but a calm sea. Poor planning? Poor communication with passengers on the delays and missed ports. In fact poor communications on nornal day to day events too. I won’t be cruising with Fred Olsen again any time soon.

Title: 62 nights California Mexico and Panama Canal Summary: Fantastic cruise and itinerary, Fred Olsen knows how to look after his passengers, especially the entertainments dept who worked so hard, led by Elliott Taylor. A fantastic job despite having circa 30% itinerary changes (significant) due to getting caught in a fishing line which resulted in repairs at San Diego for 3 days. After repairs, the Balmoral did not seem to cope in terms of speed with bad weather. If the crossing across the Atlantic...

Title: Christmas on Balmoral Summary: Embarkation was good so thought we were in for a good cruise – wrong. Christmas Eve was good with carol service with the staff followed by port, sherry and mince pies. Christmas morning was most enjoyable with reindeer racing with senior officers and deck party with mulled wine. Then downhill. Christmas evening meal consisted of plenty of turkey, one sprout cut in half, no parsnip, carrot or stuffing. My husband had thin slice of parsnip...

Title: Mystery Cruise Summary: Disappointed to learn during the cruise that formal evenings were mandatory dress. Had we known this we would not have booked. The attitude of the head waiter was pretty poor. We were on second sitting, (we did not request this) and because we were refused entry to the restaurant, we only had 20 minutes to eat at the cafe. On making a formal complaint the following morning, ( there was no one available at the...

Title: Good value for money Summary: This was our first cruise with Fred Olsen. We had a premier suite which was really lovely. Decor throughout was excellent. Food overall was good but only ever 2 starter choices! Also if you opted to go to the Palms cafe for dinner, the food was very limited and often dried up or lukewarm. The cafe is way too small for the guests. People were bumping into one another everywhere and there was often a...

Title: Uncrowded Baltic Summary: Thoroughly enjoyed our second cruise aboard Balmoral. This is a happy friendly ship with brilliant crew. We were not too impressed with Gothenburg but enjoyed our visits to Copenhagen, Tallin, Helsinki, St. Petersburg and Oslo. St. Petersburg was very busy so I can imagine that it is a nightmare to visit in the summer months. are some amazing cathedrals and waterways in St.Peterburg and it is worth the visit. The entertainment on board was again...

Title: Spain,Portugal and Morocco Summary: The staff were as usual very friendly and efficient. The weather was good with calm seas most days, The Captains in Cadiz day was especially good with a flamenco dance demonstration, fun games, music and the opportunity to visit the other three ships. We enjoyed all of our shore excursions.

Title: Captains in Cadiz Summary: We had a great holiday food, service ports of call all really enjoyable. Only set back was our newly refurbished interior cabin 8058 had a separate toilet Jack and Jill sinks and a shower cubicle at the expense of any real hanging space at all. When I asked the Manager to look for himself as he claimed not to understand what the problem was he agreed one narrow closet with no full length hanging space...

Title: Favourite Ship Summary: Just returned from our second cruise on Balmoral this summer, both trips to the Scottish Highlands and Islands with our teenage children. The best aspect of smaller ship cruising is the more personal service and attention you receive from the crew, something we have found lacking on other cruise lines with much larger ships. It is also nice to be able to sail much closer into destinations and to be able to get on and...

Title: Scottish Highlands and Islands ref L1826 Summary: Our first cruise with Fred Olsen. Public areas, the layout of the ship and level of service very good. Spey and Avon restaurants were quite special compared with Ballindalloch. Entertainment was good with now fairly rare live orchestra backing in the Neptune Lounge. The cabin was perfectly clean with excellent shower room and unobtrusive stewarding. Cabin no. was 5175, and we found the L-shape bed layout strange, the transverse one having no bedside table or...
