From Iceland to Greenland and back, you’ll experience the most awe-inspiring sights nature has to offer in the northern hemisphere. At only 150 miles south of the Arctic Circle – at the mouth of a group of fjords – Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, is the perfect starting point for a whale-watching trip, a dog-sled ride, or glacier exploration. The Qaqortoq Museum is an amazing split site, where one building houses Dorset, Thule and Norse culture exhibits while the other is a must-see blacksmith workshop dated to 1804 containing numerous Norse artifacts. Then finish your tour of Greenland by making like a polar bear and going to Nanortalik, which literally translates to “place where the polar bears go.” But that’s not all the wildlife in the area, there are many minke whales in the waters around the town, swimming around waiting for you to spot them.

In recent years, Reykjavik has made something of a name for itself as a trend-setting city and the edgy shops and bars bear this out. But it still doesn’t detract from the big ticket here – the scenery. Glaciers and geysers, mountains and waterfalls give away Iceland’s volcanic origins and create the mysterious, romantic landscapes that inspired ancient Icelandic sagas.

Nestled along the shores of one of the most breathtaking fjords in Iceland, Akureyri is the nation’s second largest urban area and a centre of Icelandic folk culture. Visit the museums, hike along the extraordinary vistas or explore the botanical gardens. Shop in one of the charming boutiques and then catch a glimpse of the most northerly 18-hole golf course in the world. After you’ve worked up an appetite, feast on some Nordic specialties like smoked lamb and fresh fish and then indulge in an Icelandic fried pastry.
