Gothenburg is a wonderfully welcoming Swedish port of call with a delightfully friendly atmosphere and eccentric green surroundings. One of the first things passengers will notice when arriving into Gothenburg on a Baltic Sea cruise is the sheer amount of parklands and botanical gardens where rare orchids and roses grow.
Gothenburg is a popular cruise destination and sailing into the port is truly beautiful sight. Cruise ships sail through an archipelago of small, quaint islands and you’ll also pass the charming old fishing villages that radiate charisma of this great port of call. Gothenburg is a true seaport, and the city’s compact centre means that is perfect for cruisers that have only a limited time in port. Beautiful canals, lush green parks, museums and more are all within walking distance from the city centre.
As the second largest city in Sweden, Gothenburg serves up a treat when it comes to excursions. One of the best ways to witness the city highlights is by taking a canal cruise, that has become increasingly popular over the years. The method of transport across the canals is known as a ‘Paddan’ or even a ‘Toad’ to the locals, and this typical sightseeing boat will allow you to take in some of the cities superb sights including Masthuggs Church, Museum of Fine Arts, the Concert Hall and the Municipal Theatre.
For something more active and adrenaline pumping, visit the Liseberg Amusement Park with its amazing theme park rides and impeccable landscapes. Elsewhere shopping lovers will also love this city and especially a visit to the latest designer stores that line the inner city streets along a diverse range of local boutiques. Plenty of cafés and restaurants line the streets so you can take a pew and sample the local cuisine. If you wish to indulge in retail therapy but prefer to get out of the city centre, then take a trip to Nordstan to find Scandinavia’s largest shopping centre.
The Maritime Centre in Gothenburg is just excellent and well worth a visit, along with the many other sublime points of interest within the city centre. If you do prefer to get away from it all though, there’s nothing like a drive north towards the Swedish west coast. Here you can witness the Bohus Fortress ruins before arriving at the breathtakingly beautiful areas of Stenungsund and the islands Tjörn and Orust. These enchanting locations are all connected by bridge, and if you only have time to stop for a photograph at one of them, the Tjörn bridge with the Askerö Fjord running below is picture perfect.
The sightseeing opportunities at Gothenburg are excellent and the majestic scenery glistens wherever you go. From the moment your cruise ship even gets close to the city, you realise just how beautiful the area is from its delightful greenery to the city skyline. Gothenburg is a gem of historical and architectural splendour that you don’t want to miss.
