    Drinking Alcohol.

During almost every thread on 'Smoking', and there have been one or two, a 'smoker' nearly always says "Ah! But what about the Drinkers?". So - I thought I'd start a thread on the smokers' behalf and see if it gets as strong views - or as some would say - sarcasm. Question:- Do people having a drink on a ship cause as much consternation as people smoking on a ship? Have fun. cheers Harvey
  2. I'm in total agreement re talks and lectures. P&O have really cut down on lecturers. Who is interested in a talk on colonic irrigation? I've cruised a lot with P&O and they are one of three cruise lines I sail with (P&O, Cunard & Celebrity). Cunard still have the best lectures at sea.

Cost Of Single Cabins On Azura

Single cabins are depressing AND they are usually inside cabins. I've only had a single cabin - never again. It was an outside cabin and I've said this before but was no room to swing the proverbial cat in it. I also didn't save any money either.

    P&o Booze Prices!!!

Is saving £5 pounds really worth the effort of lugging these around?

Has anyone stayed in Ventura Cabin L223?

If you're the slightest worried about it - change to another cabin. To avoid any noise from facilities I always try to get a cabin on a deck with cabins above and below.

    Post Office Currency Card

My advice is make your life as simple as possible. Get a credit card. Use it on holiday then stop using it until your next holiday. Use a debit card to withdraw cash in the USA. Simple.

    Room 101

I quite agree OWT. I also think that some of the contributors to this thread must go on entirely different types of cruises to me. I haven't come across a fraction of the moans mentioned. As you say OWT - "Life's too short."

"british" Icons - Is It Necessary To Live Here?

Hear hear. Would you not feel a teeny weeny bit of loyalty to the country which educated you at great expense? Do you not think that people educated here should help to educate the next generation by paying taxes in this country. After all, it's this new generation who will pay the ex Pats UK state pensions into overseas bank accounts upon retirement. I'd also bet that all these ex Pat tax dodgers have the nearest British Consulate's phone number in their mobile phone. First sign of trouble and they'd be shouting for help and pushing and shoving to get on a UK paid for aeroplane back to safe ol' Blighty.

    Costa Concordia.

I wonder if that means that Greenpeace would be happy for it to be towed to India and beached for breaking up - along with numerous other ships - and cause further pollution there. Surely they don't want to leave it where it is! It certainly won't just disappear.

Whilst I'm always polite and courteous with the crew I come into contact with I must admit that I have no desire to become their 'friend'. I find that my fellow passengers far more interesting to chat to.

Good afternoon kellyohara It's a personal choice but I always prefer going ex UK. No luggage restrictions, no hanging around airports for hours on end and to top it all - 3 or 4 lovely sea days to relax and get to know the ship. Ex UK still gives you a fantastic choice of destinations. My favourites are: Venice, Dubrovnik etc.; the Baltics; the Fjords. This still leaves the Med. with all it's wonderful cities and wonderful weather. If you like sea days then go for:- a trans-Atlantic crossing. None better than on QM2. The Caribbean - 6/7 sea days both to and fro. (The Caribbean is certainly worth seeing - but one island is much the same as another. But - still worth seeing.) Fly cruise:- Hawaii is a truly wonderful cruise. It all depends on how long you've got for your cruise and if you prefer sea days or airports. Whichever, the choice is mind boggling. Best of luck - and enjoy. cheers Harvey

    Formal Nights On Msc

Thing is - according to what! Does this mean Black Tie or clean jeans? cheers Harvey
  13. If I want to go on a particular cruise then I'll pay whatever supplement is required. The alternative is to stay at home or go on your second, third or even fourth choice of cruise. My view is that if circumstances had been different I would have been paying for two anyway. I also steer clear of single cabins - no room to swing the proverbial cat in them. You can't take it with you - spend your money - you can leave the house to the kids. cheers Harvey

Which Cruise Line Has The Best Loyalty Club

You got it spot on Duncan. A few free drinks, a bit of laundry or WiFi all amount to a drop in the ocean and would not entice me to use a particular cruise line. As you say - there are the few cocktail parties for higher tiers and my experience of these are nothing to rave about. I do attend some on Cunard and P&O but they don't really impress me and certainly do not entice me to book further cruises. cheers Harvey
  15. The Fjords is a wonderful cruise - wall to wall scenery all day and all night. Enjoy.

For existing illnesses such as Cancer and Cardiac it's worth going online, or telephone, for a quote from 'insurancewith.com'. I use them and got their name from the Macmillan website. As an example a couple of years ago I had quotes for going on the QM2 Soton/NY/Soton of £2200 - 2500 from three companies, two wouldn't quote, and 'Insurancewith' quoted £230!!!!! I've used them ever since. cheers Harvey
  17. I quite agree Shetlander in that the 'shared experience of cruising' is diminishing as the ships get bigger. Now 'that' is a real shame. cheers Harvey

    Queen Mary 2

It's not just Cunard who have areas set aside for their top cabin guests. Most of the cruise lines have segregated areas now - Celebrity and NCL just to name just two. I've been on QM2 and QE as a 'steerage' balcony passenger and I have never really been put out in the slightest by the 'Grills' passengers areas. They are pretty tiny and discreet in comparison to the whole ship - otherwise all passengers share the same facilities. cheers Harvey

    Your Favourite Cruise Line

I've sailed with eight cruise lines and Cunard is now my favoured choice of cruise line with the Queen Mary 2 being my favoured ship. I prefer Cunard for several reasons - one being their excellent quality of on-board speakers. P&O is also a cruise line I like but one irk is that they now have far too many 'in-house' speakers from the spa. Talks on colonic irrigation are not too appealing. Celebrity - sadly I've not been on one of their ships for around four years now; mainly because they don't have too much choice of destination ex UK but going by my past experience they are an excellent cruise line. These three cruise lines are the only ones I would now consider sailing with. cheers Harvey

    Least Favourite Cruise Line

My least favourite cruiselines are Cruise & Maritime Voyager (CMV) and Costa. CMV for their ancient ships and dreadful food. Costa for their continuous announcements in 20 languages (20 is maybe a bit of an exaggeration) with English always being last.

    Old Cruiser

Good evening chocolatemarley My sympathies to you - I understand and know what it's like. My tips are:- Book the same type of cabin you used to have. My experience of single cabins is that there is barely room to swing the proverbial cat. It also reinstates every minute you are in this tiny cabin that you are on your own. My view on cost is that if circumstances had been different you would have been paying for two anyway. Sod the cost - you can't take it with you. I always have a balcony cabin. Go Club dining. I've made good friends over evening dinner. Go to the Main Dining Room for breakfast and lunch. You have enough meals by yourself at home. The most difficult time I find is going for a pre dinner drink. Meet up with some your club dining companions. Don't squirrel away in your cabin - get out and about. Do give it a go. I've done 6 or 7 this last three years. cheers Harvey
  22. I see that the Berlitz guide has downgraded both Azamara ships from 4+ stars to 4 stars. This gives them the same rating as P&O and the steerage part of Cunard. What has gone wrong with Azamara I wonder. cheers Harvey

    Saver Fare Shuttle Buses

Sad - just another inclusive 'part of cruising' done away with. It's not the monetary value which irks it's just another little bit of traditional cruising chipped away. I'd far rather that prices increased and maintained these little niceties. cheers Harvey

    Cunard School Holidays

Thanks for the 'heads up' - one for me to avoid.
