Apathy rules - or so it seems-

I think I have mentioned before on this forum that, despite all our thoroughly enjoyable cruises over the years, our favourite form of holiday remains taking our touring caravan across to France. Only a few days ago, I was checking out the pricing of a journey through the Chunnel but, that is back off the agenda for now with the latest twist in the European tale. We have, however, just had our first weekend of the year with the 'van at a Caravan & Motorhome site, meeting up with my sister and her husband for the first time since Christmas. Next week we're heading North for a few days in York, an overnight in Durham and then pushing on to Scotland where we plan to meet up with our Grandchildren for the first time since February before they return to their re-opened schools in only the second week in August. I was very impressed with the way in which the C&M Club have set things up on their sites to make a camping trip about as safe as you can get. Thank goodness for the caravan. DavidH

No cruises - no issues to discuss!! "Simples"!! DavidH
  3. We have invariably selected our cruises in the past based on ports of call. However, we have occasionally returned from a cruise feeling as though we need a holiday to recover from the all action, port a day, routine. More recently, we have gone for a balance of calls and sea days. As for the future.....................................? DavidH

    Where to in our winter?

Hi OWT, Have you considered Warner Leisure Breaks. Not in Kent/Sussex but we enjoyed a few days at Sinah Warren Hotel on Hayling Island some years ago, From their website, it would seem Warners are opening up from 27 July. DavidH
  5. Hi Anchors-aweigh, My wife and I, together with a couple of friends, are due to embark Azamara Quest in mid November in Lisbon, visiting the Canaries and Cape Verde Islands before crossing The Atlantic for calls in Brazil, with Buenos Aires as the final stop. Being a US cruise line, I do not expect the cruise to go ahead and, right now, I would prefer that Azamara cancel the whole thing. Preferably, before we are due to pay the outstanding balance in mid-August. Much as we enjoy on board ship life, it's the ports of call that inform our cruise choices and, given the state of play in Latin America, I suspect the calls in Brazil and Uruguay will be pulled. Cruise Refund

The Consumers Association has been majoring on this issue of refunds for several weeks now but to no avail. They make the legal position quite clear but it doesn't seem to matter one jot. I think the bottom line is we are not going to see refunds on cancelled trips until things ease enough for others to book and the travel companies start to get some cash flow back in. That's why so many are offering future credits - they just don't have the cash reserves. DavidH

    Annual insurance

Hi towny44, As you've already been made aware, the answer is "none". DavidH

    Annual insurance

After some internet research, a disappointing telephone conversation with a rather rude and very aggressive guy from Staysure and further discussion with current insurers, LV, we have gone with Saga for the next 12 months. Very surprised, as Saga were hugely expensive the last time I looked at them - mind you, that was in 2005!!!! As always, hoping we never have to claim on it. DavidH

    Annual insurance

Have today received the renewal notice from LV for our Annual Travel Insurance policy which has a renewal date of 1 June. With no apparent change to the Premier cover level which we have and based on our current area of cover (we have worldwide excluding North and Central America, Caribbean and Bahamas) the premium quoted is almost 30% up on what we paid this time last year. As I referred to in an earlier post, with price comparison websites out of action for travel insurance, it makes a challenge to the price quoted somewhat difficult. DavidH

    Queen Mary 2

Hi tekram (James), Very interesting. Wouldn't it be good to know, in current circumstances, whether or not you have developed an immunity as a result? Best not to try and find out!! DavidH

    Annual insurance

Hi Panda, Hope you don't mind my asking but, why take out an annual policy if you only require cover for 2 months in the year? DavidH

    Over 70s

Well, this particular over 70 has taken the bull by the horns. Prompted by an email from Bolsover this morning (a follow up to an enquiry following the cancellation of our Holland America Japan and Russia cruise back in February) we have booked the same cruise again but for April 2021. Their just announced "Have It All" promotional package, combined with the 25% future cruise credit they gave us for the cancelled 2020 cruise, meant we had an offer from HAL that was too good to miss out on...…………………...or will we????????????? Over 70s

One would certainly hope so. DavidH
  14. So, Larry Pimentel has decided to call it a day as Royal Carribean announce sweeping job cuts. Azamara being our favourite cruise line over recent years and with back to back cruises on Quest in the diary for November/December this year, we wonder if he is deserting sinking ships? Having been appointed President and Chief Executive in 2009, his will be a very hard act to follow, in my view. Fingers crossed for later this year. DavidH

    Annual insurance

I guess, if renewal is the only option, it puts paid to the annual ritual of seeking competitive quotes to knock the renewal price down. No doubt insurers will also be looking to recoup some of their extraordinary losses during recent months and the months to come. DavidH

    How is everyone

Hi Jenjen, Thank you for asking. My wife and I are fine, if somewhat bored. As you say, we would all probably have been elsewhere at this time. Other than that, life is not that different to normal as our family are miles away. Grandchildren in Scotland. We usually go up there every 6 weeks or so but at least had February half term with them at a Forest Lodge in Strathyre. Our Bedfordshire based daughter, as a professional singer and singing coach, is badly affected by the lockdown but is keeping the choir she runs going via online rehearsals. As with Countrygirl, we are fortunate to be village dwellers with lots of beautiful Nottinghamshire countryside to roam (within the Government guidelines, of course). I try to "power walk" between 3 and 6 miles per day, keeping my competitive nature afloat using an app called "MapMyWalk" to monitor my performance. An American lady tells me how far I've walked and at what pace!! People around here are pretty good at "passing by on the other side" to maintain social distancing and I choose routes that very few people use and are, generally, wide enough to not need to pass within 2 metres. The weekly shop is, of course, a trial. On Friday last, whilst my wife struggled on her own with the Tesco trolley (as directed by their latest policy), I went to Sainsbury's to try to get some of our favourite mushy peas. It was 8.30am and the queue was, literally, a quarter of a mile long. Needless to say, we had garden peas with our fish. Drinking far too much alcohol, of course but nothing new there. Stay safe everyone. DavidH

    Never thought Cunard and P&O

When it comes to investment, it's not "timing" but "time in" that really counts. DavidH

    Never thought Cunard and P&O

Hi OWT, Do hope that's not a "Panic Buy" you're suggesting. 😁 DavidH

    Question

HI KnR, Long time no see/hear. If I was to say the situation over here was "S---", I would be accurate but could get into trouble, if you get my drift. Panic buying to an extraordinary degree. Stay safe!! DavidH

    Diamond princess

This appalling and frightening situation has certainly impacted on all cruise lines operating in the Far East. Our April cruise of Japan and Russia on MS Westerdam has been cancelled by Holland America Line and I understand from Bolsover that all cruise operators have pulled out of the area. DavidH

Thanks, OWT. Excellent photos and a pretty original new arrival. DavidH

    Silversea cruises

Hi Tigglesville, I note, from a previous post, that you are already booked to cruise with Marella. I cannot comment on the experience as a single traveller but can tell you that my wife and I regard them as offering very good value for money. However, I can also tell you that the Silversea experience is very, very different and will make you feel very special. As afcandrew says, if you have the budget, they are most definitely worth it. But it would probably be fair to say that you could book two cruises with Marella for the price of one with Silversea. As the saying goes - "You pays your money and takes your choice". DavidH

    Spirit of Discovery

So true, OWT. I've spent hours on the internet organising how best to get to and from Heathrow to spend a month abroad in November/December 2020 without leaving my car at the airport for that length of time. Finished up renting cars for the trips down and back, with an overnight hotel before we fly. Very disappointed to find out how much more expensive car hire becomes once over 70!!!! But still a cheaper option than taxis and, with luggage for 4 weeks away, a better option than train travel, in my view. Incidentally, the trip is 4 nights in Lisbon before Azamara cruises to Rio de Janeiro via Madeira, Canaries, Cape Verde Islands and then on to Buenos Aires. Just wish Saga had an itinerary of interest. DavidH

    Ijmuiden - location and excursions

Hi BanburyBlue, Unfortunately, I have no personal experience of porting in Ijmuiden to offer you but you may find it helpful to check out the information on "www.whatsinport.com". Clearly, the only reason to spend 2 days in Ijmuiden is to afford passengers the time to visit the wonderful city that is Amsterdam. Having visited many times, though never from a cruise ship, I would suggest you spend as much time in the city as possible. Strolling the canals and visiting the Flower Market, with a canal side lunch and a beer (try the Calf And Bloom just across the canal from the Flower Market) are essentials in my book. Hope that helps, if only a little. DavidH

    Happy New Year

Yep!!! Tesco's have a prominent display of Hot Cross Buns and Mini Eggs. Pleased to say we'll be in Japan at Easter this year. DavidH
