I'm still around. I've recently been on a back to back of 28 days on the Queen Victoria.  As we've jumped ship from P&O and are unlikely to book a cruise with them again I've found I'm not interested in any threads about them. Perhaps I should start a thread about why Cunard should include the gratuities in the price of the cruise as P&O have done.😉

It hasn't put me off cruising or dressing up for formal nights either. It's just starting to seem a little ridiculous to me now. I have just been reading a P&O Facebook group and someone asked if their partner could just wear a waistcoat instead of a jacket on formal nights. The answers are of course varied. However quite a few people have said their husbands get too hot so take the jacket off as soon as they sit down. So what is the point. 🙄 Either it's formal and everyone abides by it or not. Some 6* lines don't have a 'formal night' probably because they know their passengers will all be suitably dressed. I think it's time P&O stopped pretending to be something they are not. I now prefer Cunard and really hope they don't go the way of P&O. So far no mothballs or BO has been smelt in the lift.

Now that is an entirely different thing. I too would have a huge problem with that. I have been in the lift with people dressed up to the nines whose clothes have smelt of mothballs and BO. That has been very unpleasant too.

I used to think it was very important that people stuck to the dress code. While I think people should at least look smart I agree with Davybe I'm more bothered about people being nice these days. Some of the best dressed aren't always the nicest.

Like it lump it dress codes are changing.I have no issues at all with what others wear,I am more concerned with how nice people are.
Some one on QE said "Did you see that man who changed into a track suite after diner, he ruined everyones night" She got even more upset than I said "He Did not ruin mine"?
But People know what Cunard expects from their clients regarding the dress code,But I did smile when on Formal night this man dressed in his national dress,I think he may have been an Afghan Goat herder ,he got some funny looks and lots of tuts....Davybe

I see what you did there HLM😉. Of course people have a choice whether or not to pay a tip. Having said that I still believe that those of us who pay tips are subsidising those who pay no tips at all. It will be interesting to see what happens on P&O after May.

We've always left the auto gratuities on and given extra tips in envelopes. The reason for this is we have no idea whatsoever who gets what. I've always wished that gratuities would be included in the price of the cruise.  I've always thought that would be the fairest way as whatever you are prepared to pay for your cruise is then up to you.  It's a little ironic that now we've tried Cunard and are unlikely to go back to P&O they are finally stopping the auto gratuities. Now we are faced with the same dilemma on Cunard. On our cruise last year we did the same as we've always done, left them on and still gave the butler, his assistant, the Maitre D, the Head waiter and the waiters extra. Quite honestly I did feel a little compelled to do this but would feel like a cheapskate if we didn't. I suppose some of you will think we are suckers but like Dancing Queen until I know for certain who gets what, which is unlikely we'll carry on being suckers.

I have always been quite (ok very !! )  vociferous in my opinion on auto gratuities and I fully supported them however on our recent back to back on Cunard I was informed by a very reliable source ( senior management ) that any gratuities given to dining/cabin stewards they are allowed to keep ... as we were part way through the first cruise I left the gratuities in place but decided to remove them for the second one.
I can't say I felt comfortable doing this especially if the stewards are aware who leaves them on and who removes them as I really didn't want them to think they would get nothing because this wasn't the reason I did it, we certainly didn't notice any difference in the service so I suspect they don't know, what I will say is the auto grats seem good value to me as we spent much more tipping individually than we do when Cunard decide on who gets what but on a positive those we wanted to reward I believe did get to keep it especially if our cabin stewards reaction was anything to go by ... it isn't something I would ever discuss with the stewards so I suppose I am still in the dark to what does actually happen.

Just waded through the new awful Cunard website to look at the wine packages and I see they are offering a drinks package for $69 per day now on the QV and the QE as from December 2018.

After trying Cunard in the Queen's grill for the first time last year, I doubt we'll be tempted back to P&O either. As to the drinks package I think it's a reasonable price. I wouldn't say we are heavy drinkers but we spent a lot more than that per day on Cunard in spite of buying their wine packages.

P&O can charge what they like for their drinks package, they won't be getting my money.  We gave up on them a couple of years ago and haven't seen anything likely to tempt us back.

A few years ago we purchased the drinks package on a Celebrity cruise, I can't remember the exact cost but it was around £1100 for us both on a 17 day cruise, I don't consider either of us are 'excessive' drinkers but we certainly more than broke even, we did have quite a lot of sea days so I do think this is something to be taken into account, also with Celebrity it included speciality coffee/water etc and not having read the T&C from P&O I wouldn't know if it is the same.
Personally I think £39.95 pppd is a pretty good price ( depending on how many sea days ) on average it is only 5/6 drinks per day  - less if like us you are used to paying US prices !! they don't necessarily have to be alcoholic drinks 🍷 🍺

Great pictures. We have been up and down the Panama canal. It's very interesting, and no doubt a great feat of engineering, but I was a little disappointed there wasn't as much wild life as I was led to expect.

No we were too far from home and then the wife threatened me with "have to purchase some onboard" and knowing the prices and we had 2 sea days before we hit our first port of call managed to see a sign for superstore on A34 and found a Tesco's 🤣

Arrived home recently from a back to back in the Queen's Grill on Cunard. I've never had such wonderful food on a cruise ship before, having previously only cruised with P&O. However they still couldn't supply decent toast in the mornings so that really was the only thing I missed foodwise.

I agree. Whether they include it in the price of the cruise or the gratuities are taken out in some other way, it's a good thing. No more subsidising people who remove the charge. No more reading the excuses from people as to why they don't pay. Ooh! Yes we'll have to find something else to argue about now.😉
