Last year the author of the Berlitz guide described Hapag - Lloyd's Europa 2 as “a stunningly spacious, top-notch informal ship for sophisticated cosmopolitan travellers... the benchmark in contemporary cruising.

So with that in mind Solent Richard and Solent Barbara set off to give her a a try...

We joined the Europa 2 in Istanbul after spending one pre-cruise night in that vibrant city. Incidentally taking the recommendation of a forum member to enjoy an evening meal at the amazing Sunset Grill and Bar high above the Bosphorus...

Our first full day on board was a sea day as we sailed through the Dardanelles heading for the island of Lesbos and the port of Mytilene where we organised our own excursion to the Roman Aquaduct at Moria...

Every day was to be a new port and only one on this itinerary was a place that we had been before, Kusadasi.

Our second port of call was Volos and here we took the ship's full day excursion to Meteora to see the famous monastery complex...

Third port of call was Kusadasi where we delighted to spot one of our favourite ships alongside...

...and take the opportunity to catch up with old friends at the same time.

Next up was the island of Patmos and once again we signed up for a ship's excursion, on this occasion a visit to The Cave of the Apocalypse and the Monastery of St. John the Theologian...

Last but not least of our ports of call was to Hydra in the Saronic islands. As far as a picturesque port goes this had to be the icing on the cake and, incidentally, as there are no buses and coaches on this well preserved island, there were no ship's excursions. None the less, there was plenty to se and one or two vantage points to be climbed...

I will of course be completing a full review of both the ship and the ports of call in due course.

Needless to say the Berlitz Guide isn't far out as far as we  are concerned.

Looks like great ports of call. I look forward to your review .

Hello,very nice Richard.

Rodger.

Thank you both.

That was one amazing ship and concept. I don't want to give too much away but it certainly breaks the mould in certain cruising areas...

One thing is for sure, Bolsover Cruise Club Forum will have the pictures and story first.
