A Review Of The Western Med with Cunard On Board Queen Victoria

2 posts in this topic

At first sight a17 night cruise of the Western Mediterranean seemed a long time in the same area especially as repeat visits to some ports were included. However this was not the case as the West Med offers a string of civilised ports with much to see and do. The ship was Cunard’s Queen Victoria which is a favourite of ours due to its inbuilt luxury feel in all areas. The cruise involved a flight to Rome to join the ship at Civitiveccia which was achieved comfortably.

The itinerary included visits to Livorno, Monte Carlo, Spezia, Barcelona, Corsica, Civitiveccia again, Rapallo, Monte Carlo again, Barcelona, Valencia, Gibraltar Southampton. The repeat visits were no problem in fact they were a bonus because one could plan the next visit from a position of familiarity.

Visits ashore to Rome, Cap Ferrat, Nice, Barcelona were memorable. Surface transport in this region is good cheap and plentiful. We visited great art galleries, historic sites and experienced the cultures of the four principal countries involved.

If this was not enough we had the Queen Victoria to enjoy every day. She has wonderful public spaces our favourites being the superb library, the Crows Nest lounge with its panoramic forward views, the excellent ballroom and of course the comfortable spacious dining room. The ship has a curiously enjoyable  “heritage” feel about it and I have never seen a ship with so many luxurious elevators. It was wonderful to experience all this based on our balcony stateroom waking every day in a different port.
