P&O Baltic cruise

Recommended Posts

I did this cruise a couple of years ago and loved it. The only problem I found was the visa issue. Unless you go to the extra expenses of your own visa you were not free to roam in St Petersburg.we had to take the ship tours or other tours with companies ashore that had been pre booked so we did not need to do our own visas.  But a great holiday.

Hi

Did the baltic two years ago. Did not do the two day tour. Did a trip to ballet, and a tour on each day. Heard no one complaining about the two day tour nor about individual cruises. As you will appreciate - it is all down to personal preferences at the end of the day. Personal favourite trip was one taken under our own "steam" by going down to Helsinki town and taking a trip to a small island on which the armed forces were on e stationed. Now being developed as a visitor attraction.

For anyone who has done a P&O Baltic cruise, did you do the 2 day excursion while in St Petersburg and, if so, what did you think of it, was it worth the money?  Many thanks.

We did the baltic tour a year or so back with RCI and ignored all the expensive on board trips. In St Petersburg we used the excellent SPB tours and had the best excursion  from a ship[ we`d ever done. 2 days on a minibus with only 8/9 people and we got everywhere with a great driver and guide. Excellent local flavour lunches which I`d moaned about not wanting but loved them and the respite from solid walking tours. As we watched the boat trip in large coaches struggle to get parked in parts of the city visited (especially the hermitage we were so pl;eased to be in a minibus accessing all areas and changing plans with the guide in orders of visits according to weather / crowds. Given that there was a major running event in the city - and often is a major event on in St Petersburg this local knowledge was superb. We didn`t waste time waiting for stragglers and paid less than half the price per head that the boat trip charged. Paid on arrival if I remember rightly and they sorted all the visa requirements with information sent in advance. Highly recommended.

Never done that cruise with P&O but have done it twice with Celebrity.

As Jinky said try the private tours they are better value for money but can be quit intensive ,2 long days.

We did the ships tours which were good and long enough for us (Old and ill) All guides in Russia have to be qualified so no matter which you chose they should be capable guides. Alla tours Red October ,and Denrus are other worth looking at .

We did the Canal tour ,Russian Museum,Church on the blood ,The best one for us was the Peterhof palace and Gardens ,You see the private tours being ushered through ,jumping the queue   .a long trip but well worth it will put a couple of pictures from the gardens.

We used Red October, as did our daughter on a different cruise, but make sure you use the Russian site (.ru) not the American one which will be more expensive. They are an approved tour company and the visas are included whilst on the tour, but you cannot go off on your own. I cannot praise them highly enough. The arrangements are carried out by email, in English, and they reply within 24 hours. We had a minibus for six , (we were travelling together), a guide who spoke better English than I do, and a driver. We skipped all the queues that the official ships tours had to endure and there was no problem hearing our guide! It was great fun. The two day tour was bespoke to us and flexible and you don't pay until the end. We paid in US$. We saw much more and for a lot less money than those on the ship's tours did.

There are other official tour operators, but we have only used this one.

We used Alla Tours but SPB is another reputable company.  As you will be in a group, probably on a 16 seat mini-bus you do not a visa and the tours are so much better than travelling in a larger group.  We made up a private party through the roll-call on another cruise forum and it was excellent as we could tailor it to our requirements - visiting a synagogue at the request of one group member, particular paintings in the Hermitage at the request of others and a real Russian supermarket (at 7:30 on Sunday morning!) at the request of all of us.  Fascinating!  Cost was not much different from the, in our case, Celebrity offering, but far better value for money, helped in no small way by our excellent guide, Olga.

What ever you choose to do two days are easy to fill. so much to see and do so choose carefully.   We did Baltic May/June 2016 and the St Petersburg trips were worth every penny.  Highly recommend the evening concert and visit to the Hermitage.  Wonderful.

We cruised with P & O and did the two day St Petersburg  Grand Tour with Alla tours.  Our guide and driver were brilliant.  We were only a small group of ten people, which I think may have helped with regard to ease of getting everyone together again after visiting the sights.  On day one some of the people on the ship tour were due to visit the ballet but the tour arrived back slightly late which didn't leave them much time to get ready - I think it was a thirty minute turnaround so please bear this in mind.  Value for money was excellent and we saw more sights than the ship tour

we used trip ashore for a two day trip as recommended by Bolsover cruises and they were top class.  Meals good, small party,  into Hermitage before open to public Boat to ourselves on the river cruise unlike some that were packed on. did all the top places.  First class guide with great knowledge.

We used SPB tours from a Celebrity cruise, much cheaper and far better than anything offered by the cruise lines.

Do Alla tours much easier than ship ones. they do all the paper work and use 16 seater mini buses and you have no queuing at venues and sometimes in before official opening times. You book online and don`t pay until the second day. Ian
