Holland America celebrate 140 years

Holland America Line will this year celebrate their 140th anniversary and to mark the occasion the renowned cruise line have come together to form a partnership with the world famous Keukenhof Spring gardens in the Netherlands.  The partnership has been created to develop an exclusive tulip for Holland America Line.     The cruise line was originally founded in Rotterdam on April 18, 1873 and to mark the anniversary occasion Keukenhof Gardens have chosen a white-petaled variety in order to honour the illustrious operator.  The cruise line began initially as a trans-Atlantic cargo company before making a huge name for themselves in the world of passenger cruising.     The new tulip will begin harvesting next spring and the first of the new bulbs will be handed over to Holland America Line Captain Edward van Zaane along with other distinguished guests.  It...

Sun Princess commences $30 million transformation

Princess Cruises announced earlier this year one of their longest serving vessels now Sun Princess would be heading into dry dock for a two-week refreshment and transformation.  The $30 million project will see the ever popular Princess ship receive a brand new atrium, completely redefined to re-emerge reminiscent of the more recent additions to the fleet.  The new atrium will receive an International Café along with a new sushi and seafood dining venue.  The Lotus Spa will be completely revamped to provide a fresh new experience for passengers and the Horizon Court buffet restaurant will also be transformed. Silversea Announce First Female Captain

Silversea have announced the news that for the very first time in their history the cruise line will have a female captain at the helm.  The cruise line have announced that Swiss national Margrith Ettlin has made history as she takes control of the Silver Explorer this month in Reykjavik.  The exciting Silver Expeditions itineraries head off the beaten track and take in some of the world’s most remote destinations.  With an occupancy of just 132 guests, Silver Explorer seeks out the finest hidden gems and Captain Ettlin will now be at the helm of these exciting adventures.  Prior to being promoted to her new role as Captain, Ettlin joined Silversea as a Staff Captain in March 2010.  Before this she worked for Germany shipping group, F. Oceania Cruises announce $50 million ship refurb plans

Oceania Cruises have announced the news that a trio of ships in their fleet will undergo a $50 million revamp.  Set to take place over a six week period, the refurbishment projects will see a whole host of changes on board.  The three ships due to receive refurbishments include Regatta, Insignia and Nautica.  All will receive brand new accommodation, public rooms and open deck features in an attempt to revitalise the vessels with more elements from the lines more recent ship additions Marina and Riviera.  The revamp projects for Nautica and Insignia will take place in Marseille whilst Regatta will undergo her transformation in Vancouver. The dry dock spell is set to commence on 24 April and continue through to 6 June 2014.  Insignia will re-commence itineraries on 8 May 2014 for a collection of European sailings from Barcelona.  Nautica...

Cunard open Getaway Fares for single passengers

Cunard have announced that from 1 September 2013 they will offer Getaway Fares to single passengers.  This has been an issue for some time and many single passengers have hoped for this decision to be made.  Vantage and Getaway Fares were introduced in July 2012 but single passengers were only able to book Vantage Fares until now.  A Cunard spokesman said: “In response to feedback as we moved into the summer 2013 lates season, we took the decision to make Getaway fares available to single passengers along with a single supplement. “This was communicated to agents on May 30. We have always valued single passengers and many travel with us, but the understandable economics mean that single passengers often pay a supplement when occupying a room designed for two people.”

Princess Cruises announce senior officers for new Regal Princess

Princess Cruises has announced the officers are set to take charge of the brand new Regal Princess in 2014.  Regal Princess, the sister ship of the recently unveiled Royal Princess will make her maiden voyage on 2 June, 2014 featuring a seven night inaugural itinerary from Venice to Barcelona.  Royal Princess made her debut in June of this year and was named by Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge.  The inaugural celebrations were fantastic and the cruise line are now even more excited to welcome sister vessel Regal Princess next year.
