We recently broke the news that Cunard Line’s flagship Queen Mary 2 will undergo a significant redesign in 2016 and we now have the latest update on what passengers can expect from the world famous vessel when she emerges from dry-dock. Queen Mary 2’s renowned Queens Grill and Princess Grill suites will all be redesigned to reveal a new look and reconfigured to maximise space. The restaurants on board will also receive a dramatic transformation leading Queen Mary 2 into the next chapter of her unparalleled commitment to luxury, sophistication and glamour.
The enhancements will take place in May and June of next year to offer passengers an updated, crisp and contemporary re-design, while still remaining true to her heritage.
The dry-dock spell will be in Hamburg lasting 25 days in total to complete the new guest experiences on board. New designs will see completely renovated areas on board the ship and new, additional venues added. Since we announced the news that she was set for a refurbishment, Cunard has revealed details that the focus for the redesign plans have revolved around three key principles: distinct and confident look and feel, intuitive areas optimised for guest use and that above all, the heritage of Cunard Line is harnessed in each design.
To maximise the potential of the redesign, Cunard brought in SMC Design to the lead the development of the public spaces and accommodation. Andrew Collier, SMC managing director, said: ‘Cunard has a unique rich heritage in both the nautical and design fields and we have researched into these and looked to incorporate aspects of pattern and design into our plans.
‘Particular attention has been paid to taking inspiration from the original Queen Mary and our aim is to enhance existing designs as well as implement a decorative overhaul, looking to emphasise the feeling of understated elegance.’
Accommodation upgrades were top of the agenda during the initial design development stages. The renowned Queens and Princess Grill suites will continue their tradition of offering passengers the highest standards of comfort at sea but with a contemporary twist to build on the already established facilities. There will be soothing muted tones and elegant textures, Cunard said, with new bespoke luxury carpets throughout featuring design work inspired by rugs from the original Queen Mary.
The Grills dining experience will also be elevated and Queen Mary 2’s Grill restaurants will both be reconfigured, with more tables for two, increased space between the tables and additional loose tables for flexibility and an improved ambiance, Cunard stated. The décor in the Grills restaurants will also be redesigned and updated to compliment the enticing menus on show. There will be a clearer differentiation between the Queens Grill and Princess Grill restaurants through design, colour scheme and furnishings.
Under the moniker ‘Queen Mary 2 remastered,’ there will be a host of further innovations and enhancements announced in the coming months.
Angus Struthers, Cunard Director, said: ‘Queen Mary 2’s Grill suites and restaurants are already rated as the best of the best. The work to be undertaken in 2016 will ensure they continue to be the finest luxury experience at sea, with an unparalled glamour and sophistication.
‘I am confident that the new Grills experience on board the world’s most iconic ship will attract even more accolades and exceed the expectations of all those who book to sail Queens Grill or Princess Grill.’
