Following the success of Viking’s ocean cruising fleet, the cruise line is expanding to incorporate expedition cruising into its fleet. Viking Octantis will be the first Viking Expeditions ship, arriving early in 2022, before being joined by sister ship, Viking Polaris, later in the year.
The adult-only Viking Octantis will carry just 378 passengers. With 260 crew, guests will enjoy an attentive passenger-to-crew ratio of 1.66, putting the new Viking Expedition ship on a par with ultra-luxury ships in terms of both space and service.

Viking Octantis will introduce many Viking firsts, including The Laboratory, where guests can join shore-based field projects with the ship’s resident scientists. An indoor/out pool promises relaxation amongst the research, while an enclosed marina space known as The Hangar will provide a stable surface for guests to board RIBs and Zodiacs. The ship will also boast a six-person submarine, excursions on which are included in your cruise fare.
The first Viking Expedition ships will retain many of the feature that have made the Viking Ocean fleet so successful too. The library on Viking ships is widely acknowledged as the best in the business and it’ll be replicated on both Viking Octantis and sister ship, Viking Polaris. The popular spa and thermal suite – and roaring open ‘fire’ – and public spaces such as the Explorers’ Lounge, the Aquavit Bar and the Living Room will all be present and accounted for too.
The Viking formula for fares is one of the best value at sea and it’ll be continued aboard expedition ships. Guests can enjoy shore excursions, beer & wine with lunch & dinner, Wi-Fi and 24-hour room service all included within the cost of their Viking Expeditions cruise. Charter flights will also be included within the fare, along with use of expedition equipment. Those booking polar trips will also receive a Viking Expedition jacket that will serve as the ultimate souvenir of their trip.
