Silver Nova Marks Silversea’s Next Step Towards Sustainability

Silversea Cruises has announced the name of its first Nova Class ship, which marks a new era of sustainability for the luxury cruise line.

Construction of Silver Nova has begun at Meyer Werft in Papenburg. The vessel will be the first hybrid luxury cruise ship that’s free of local emissions in port by using fuel cells and batteries.

When in port, shore power will enable the ship to shut down and make use of the onshore energy supply. This will contribute to a 40% reduction in greenhouse gases per double suite compared to the Silversea Cruises Muse class of ship.

Additional sustainable features of Silver Nova and other upcoming Nova class ships include a micro auto gasification system to lower onboard waste volume

The luxury cruise ship class is also projected to achieve an Energy Efficiency Design Index rating that’s approximately 25% better than International Maritime Organization requirements.

Set to be delivered in summer 2023, Silver Nova looks set to be one of the most spacious luxury cruise ships ever to be built. With 728 guests onboard and a crew-to-guest ratio of 1:1.3, passengers can expect the usual Silversea level of service alongside these extra environmental credentials.

Barbara Muckermann, Chief Commercial Officer at Silversea Cruises, said: “Sustainability is the future of luxury travel and the name Silver Nova is representative of the incredible innovation of Silversea’s luxury.

“Silversea is already a leader in environmentally conscious travel and now, with Silver Nova, we will go even further to meet the expectations of both today’s and tomorrow’s luxury traveller.”
