Plans for Hull Cruise Terminal Move a Step Closer

Yorkshire could welcome its own dedicated cruise port, as plans to construct a Hull cruise terminal take another step forward.

Hull City Council announced it had appointed specialist international firm Royal HaskoningDHV to provide support for the project, which would give cruise passengers another departure port to choose from in the north of England. Cruises from Liverpool and Newcastle are currently available, but this would be the first major commercial port on the Yorkshire coast.

Councillor Daren Hale, Leader of Hull City Council, explained that the Cruise Hull Yorkshire terminal would boost job opportunities in the area, as well as increase tourism.

“Hull needs a dedicated cruise facility in the heart of the Old Town so that we can greet cruise passengers with a five-star welcome and an immediate experience of Hull, in addition to the region’s world-class visitor attractions.

“This could also be a carbon reduction measure, reducing the need for journey to south coast ports.”

The design for the new cruise terminal in Hull currently includes shore-side electricity, enabling cruise ship operators to switch off their engines while in port. Instead, vessels will be able to rely more heavily on efficient power systems, in turn allowing them to cut overall emissions.

  • I would welcome a cruise terminal at Hull and I would certainly use it. At my age I am put off at the thought of travelling south to Southampton etc which I have not done anyway. I have sailed from Hull many times on the ferries which have been a great success over the decades and also on the cruise ship Marco Polo. I have found the Liverpool terminal good. Like Hull it is conveniently central to the City and although their are no car parking facilities on site like at King George Dock for the ferries, Liverpool have a good system where you are able to drop off your luggage at the terminal then drive to designated secure car parks then return to the terminal by a shuttle service.

Having a cruise terminal at Hull is long overdue and I congratulate Hull City Council for having the foresight in believing that it will be a success. Hull is a perfect location for a cruise terminal. Within easy reach of Beverley,York, stately homes etc and of course walking distance to the centre of Hull which has so much to offer now with more to come within the next few years.

There will always be the defeatists who seem to be against new projects like this but I am confident in the belief that this will be another step forward in promoting the City of Hull.

    • Thanks for your comments, it would certainly make cruising easier for a lot of people! We will keep you updated if there are any more announcements.

  • I would love to be able to cruise from Hull, at the moment we have to do the horrible drive down to Southampton. Which as regular cruisers is a pain, the only thing is we cruise with Cunard and P&O a lot and unless they make use of Hull we’ll still have to put up with the journey

  • Excellent idea to have a cruise terminal in Hull.
We now have to travel a considerable distance from North Nottinghamshire to existing terminals either north or south or trans Pennine which are not always easy journeys.

  • I welcome the Hull cruise terminal in Yorkshire.
I think it is great news and would love to take future cruises from Hull terminal rather than travel to Southampton and other terminals.
Keep it up and make it a reality.
    Good luck

  • This would be great for us as we live in chesterfield hope it gets built sooner than later good luck hull.

  • This would be great for cruises up to Norway & Iceland, bringing job to the north very welcome too

  • Great news, will save the agony of crossing London with its various restrictive fines to reach Dover and the crush of cross Channel traffic. Also, avoids Southampton that has become too popular with a number of cruise lines, such that at times there are traffic jams, particularly at weekends and the annual Boat Show.
The key considerations include an easy accessible approach road that avoids local traffic, adjacent, open car parking and a designated bus connection (route) with adequate room for luggage from the main railway station to the terminal.
In addition it will attract visiting cruise ships, to the economic benefit of the area.

  • I totally agree, it would be really great to cruise from Hull. It is off putting to have to travel to Southampton especially as I have a disability too. A terminal here would mean more holidays for us, which can only be a good thing!!
