A Family Summer Holiday to Remember Aboard EXPLORA I

By Michael Wilson, Managing Director, Bolsover Cruise Club

As someone who’s spent decades around ships and cruising, it’s not often I find myself on something completely new. But this summer, our family decided to try EXPLORA I, the first ship in the Explora Journeys fleet. I’ll admit that it was my daughter Katie who persuaded me. She’d already sailed with them and returned full of praise for the service, the food, and the overall feel of the experience. Her words stuck with me, and I thought – why not see it for myself?

Well, I’m pleased to say, she wasn’t wrong.

A Step into Contemporary Elegance

From the moment we stepped aboard in Civitavecchia, it was obvious EXPLORA I is no ordinary cruise ship. The design is modern and elegant, but what impressed me most was how calm and welcoming everything felt – it is stylish without being over the top. Our suite was incredibly spacious, one of the largest we’ve had at sea, with a walk-in wardrobe, luxurious linens, a generous bathroom, and lighting controls that somehow just knew what we needed at any given moment. The large private balcony became my favourite morning spot, coffee in hand, gazing out over the sea.

Service That Truly Stands Out

What really elevates the Explora experience is the service. There’s an instinctive understanding among the crew, not just of what you want, but when to offer it. It never felt rehearsed or robotic; it was genuine, relaxed, and consistent. From remembering our names to making dinner feel like a private occasion, the crew had a warmth and attentiveness that you can’t fake. It reminded me of why people fall in love with cruising in the first place.

Culinary Delights from Morning to Night

The food on board was exceptional. Every restaurant has its own distinct feel and menu, and the quality was consistently excellent. Med Yacht Club became a firm favourite, an elegant nod to Mediterranean flavours served in a relaxed yet refined setting. But even the Emporium Marketplace – the ship’s version of a buffet – was something else entirely. Think more along the lines of a luxury food hall than a typical cruise ship buffet. Beautifully presented, impeccably fresh, and far more sophisticated than you’d expect.

Poolside Perfection

With warm Mediterranean weather on our side, we spent a lot of time out on deck. The main pool area was stunning, with clean lines, sophisticated decor, and panoramic views that stretched in every direction. Daybeds were plentiful and comfortable, with a quiet, adult-friendly atmosphere that made it easy to switch off. Whether you were dipping in the pool or simply soaking in the sunshine with a drink in hand, the entire space felt like a five-star retreat.

Luxury Cruising, Reimagined

Explora Journeys isn’t just another cruise line, as they are clearly aiming to offer something different. And from my experience, they’ve hit the mark. The onboard environment strikes a rare balance: high-end without being formal, contemporary yet warm, and luxurious while still feeling approachable. It caters to seasoned cruisers who want something fresh, and to those new to cruising who want to dip their toes into luxury travel.

A Voyage to Remember

Our time aboard EXPLORA I was a family holiday we won’t forget. It offered everything we look for in a cruise: comfort, quality, connection, and those moments of quiet luxury that remind you how special it is to travel by sea. For anyone considering a step into a more elevated cruise experience, I can confidently say Explora Journeys is setting a new standard. And I’m already looking forward to the next voyage.
