Grand Princess arrived on the scene with a bang in 1998; one of the world’s leading and most innovative cruise ships ever created. A recent multi-million pound refurbishment has refreshed her refined elegance and ensured that she continues to amaze those who cruise aboard her.
A result of the extensive refreshment is The Piazza; a grand location that has become known as the heart of the ship. At all times of day and night, the opulent Piazza is a hive of activity; street performers and magicians entertain, musicians tinkle the ivories of the piano and acrobatics descend from the ceiling. Good entertainment is best served with good food and the area surrounding the Piazza houses some of the best eateries on board, with hand-tossed pizzas at Alfredo’s Pizzeria, freshly-baked breads, cookies and pastries at the International Café (open 24 hours a day – perfect for midnight treats!) and even wine and food pairing events at the Vines wine bar.
Grand Princess has effortlessly managed to retain her original charm and combine this with new innovations. Cabins are well designed, with 76% of outside cabins having their own private balcony. Itineraries including Hawaii, Alaska and North America put some of the world’s most enchanting destinations at your fingertips, while varied shore excursions immerse you in the cultures of your port.
Whether you prefer divine relaxation or sea days that are bursting with activities, Grand Princess caters to all preferences. From the bustling Princess Cruises kid’s clubs, to Zen-like spa retreats and a choice of four pools; this mid-sized ship promises something for the whole family on their cruise holiday.
Pools are the first port-of-call on sea days, and with four pools and seven whirlpools on board Grand Princess, there will be no jostling for a sun lounger. Pick you spot by the popular Neptune’s Reef pool and let the resident Calypso Band provide the soundtrack to your day. Grab a bite at Prego’s Pizzeria at lunchtime, or stay cool with free sundaes and cones from the ice cream bar. If the weather isn’t playing ball, head inside to Calypso Reef; the glass, retractable roof soon puts a stop to rainy sea days and the climate controlled pool area will have you convinced you’re already in warmer climes. Adults can enjoy a more relaxing swim at the Terrace Pool, where a generator allows you to swim laps with the ship’s wake in your sights. Lastly, the Lotus Pool is another peaceful adults-only retreat.
Movies Under the Stars has taken the Princess Cruises fleet by storm and holds pride of place on board Grand Princess. The 300sq ft. LED screen commands the area above the main pool, showing family films and entertainment during the day and Hollywood blockbusters at night; cosying up in a plush blanket and digging into freshly-popped popcorn completes the movie night experience.
The Lotus Spa is a haven of relaxation located over the bow of the ship. Pamper yourself with an extensive treatment list or simply head to the sauna or steam room and enjoy the peace. Stunning sea views make exercising that much easier in the gym and aerobic rooms located in the spa.
Deck 16 plays host to adults-only area, The Sanctuary. Just as its name suggests, the area is a sanctuary from the everyday activity on the ship; enjoy an al-fresco massage in a shaded cabana or snooze away the afternoon on one of the plush lounge chairs. At $10 for half a day’s access, The Sanctuary is the perfect hideaway in which to while away the hours.
Evening cruise entertainment is in abundance on board the Grand Princess. Princess Cruises’ signature performances light up the Broadway style stage in the Princess Theatre every night, while live musicians and comedy acts take to the stage throughout the night in the Vista Show Lounge and Explorers Lounge alike.
Deck parties leave the whole family tapping their toes to the sounds of familiar soundtracks and are as fun for the kids as they are for couples. Located forward of the main atrium, Atlantis Casino entertains its guests with poker, blackjack and roulette tables; try your hand at the poker tournament if you’re feeling exceptionally lucky.
The party never truly ends at the One5 Nightclub, where you can dance into the small hours to modern favourites. For a more relaxed atmosphere, head to the Crooner’s Martini bar, where live music accompanies an extra cocktail list.
Guests have a choice of Traditional Dining and Anytime Dining on board Grand Princess. Located on deck 6, Boticelli caters for Traditional Dining and invites passengers to dine at a set time of 5.30pm, 6.00pm or 8.15pm. At time of booking, our consultant will establish your dining preferences, and you will spend each night with the same table of diners and with the same attentive waiter throughout the length of your cruise.
Anytime Dining allows you to tailor your dining experience to suit; follow a long day on shore with a later sitting in the restaurant and give yourself a few precious hours to relax before dinner. Alternatively, choose an earlier sitting to satisfy a hungry appetite. You will meet a myriad of new faces as you dine at a different table each night in the ship’s two ‘Anytime’ dining rooms: the Da Vinci Restaurant and Michelangelo Restaurant.
Princess Cruises are renowned for the beautiful food served in their speciality dining rooms and those available on board the Grand Princess are no exception. Delight in authentic Italian fare at Sabatini’s or head to the Crown Grill where dishes such as Carpaccio of Pine Nut-Coated Lamb Loin and Madeira Glazed Wisconsin Veal Chop make up an enticing menu. Crown Grill also offers traditional pub lunches on sea days but make sure you arrive early as they are incredibly popular (and complimentary).
Casual dining options are plentiful for those who prefer to enjoy dinner with a more relaxed approach. The Horizon Buffet Restaurant is open from 5am to 11pm and serves a seemingly endless choice of foods, including many of those served on menus in the main dining rooms. Trident Grill is a popular choice for top-notch burgers and hot dogs through the day, while Prego’s Pizzeria serves those infamous hand-tossed pizzas for which Princess Cruises are so renowned.
Grand Princess adopts a casual dress code throughout the day and for shore days. Evenings largely require smart casual attire, with the exception of two formal evenings each week. Formal evenings are a great cruise tradition and give guests a chance to dress to the nines and enjoy a glamorous night.
