Disappointing Ports of Call
Tom Aspey | August 5, 2017 | Celebrity Cruises | Celebrity Eclipse
My wife and I have just returned from this cruise. First of all the ship was really good, pretty new and very clean. We had a balcony stateroom because we wanted to able to sit on the balcony and enjoy the views and had always wanted to go to the Fjords.
No problem with embarkation at Southampton. We are select captain club members and passed any of the queues so got onto the ship very quickly.
The first port of call was Molde, (Sunday). Everywhere closed. Went for a walk up the hillside with fantastic views but had to turn round when the snow got too deep to walk on, making it a bit dangerous.
Next Alesund, (Monday). This place is like a ghost town and soulless. Didn’t seem to be anyone about.
Then Flam. (Tuesday). We had pre booked a trip on the Flam railway which was excellent, had we not done so the whole of the area could have been seen in 1/2 an hour.
Next was Bergen, (Wednesday). We did our own thing, went on a small train around the town and the funicular railway. Lots to see and do and a nice place.
Last Stavanger,(Thursday). On the face of it Stavanger looks very nice, lots of shops to see, so we didn’t book any trips. Got off the ship to look around and only then found out that everywhere was shut due to it being a Public Holiday. At no time were we informed of this while on the ship so very disappointing.
Having booked this trip we were expecting to see the Fjords. Out of the five stops, only one, Flam, is actually in a Fjord, the rest are coastal towns with two of them closed and one, well!!
Overall perhaps this cruise is too early in the year making the balcony of little use.
Having said all that I would book with Celebrity again because I can’t fault the ships but won’t be returning to the Fjord’s.
