Not a good experience
Wendy Way | July 9, 2018 | Celebrity Cruises | Celebrity Eclipse
Our first time on Celebrity Eclipse and we will not be booking again. Where to start! Food was mediocre to say the least, I think tinned spaghetti was served up one night under a turkey escalope which could have come from Tesco. It was also poorly presented and the service seemed very rushed. We were on a table of 7 family members and one night my main course was served when my cousin was still eating her starters. The Sommelier -if you could call her that- was pleasant enough but proceeded to pour wine all over the table rather than into my glass! She even refilled my glass with Pinot Grigio when I was drinking Sauvignon blanc. Wine waiters should know exactly what you are drinking.
The cafeteria upstairs was like a bun fight most mornings, this was due to it being half the size of other cruise ships. Food was mediocre again and staff failed to clear away or tidy up quickly enough to allow other guests to be seated. The english breakfast was a congealed mess, don’t bother. It was extremely noisy and the constant tannoy messages made it worse. You couldn’t hear a thing.
The layout of the ship was poorly designed. There is no promenade deck to speak of. If you wanted a walk around the ship you had to go up and down on decks 12 and 14. There is also a grassed area!!!!!!at the back of the ship which was totally useless and a waste of space. No walking on it with heels or deck furniture allowed. What is the point?
The atrium in the middle of the ship was like a sound tunnel, lots of music and games going on which was quite noisy. Not a problem normally but the library and card/games room which were on decks 9 and 10 were all open plan above the atrium and not a good place to have a quiet read or bit of down time.
The entertainment was poor with the resident singers shouting rather than singing and the productions were rather strange. There was an american comedian called Al Ducharme who was rather good and a group called McCartney live who were excellent. 2 nights good entertainment out of 7 is again very poor.
The safety briefing at the beginning of the cruise was appalling to say the least. It cannot have complied with Maritime safety regulations. We were all herded into various bars and areas to watch a cringeworthy safety video but the TV screen could not be seen and the sound was non existent. No life jackets were requested for this safety drill as they were secreted under the bed. If you were disabled or had dodgy knees I fail to see how you could access them in an emergency. We tried to leave in disgust but was ordered to stay put even though we couldn’t hear or see anything.
Throughout the bars and restaurants there were a number of advertised items that were unavailable, teas, beers and wine etc. Who was doing the ordering?
On a positive note, the gym was large and well equipped. Our cabin steward Ike was excellent and kept our cabin clean. We tipped him but refused to tip anyone else as it was not deserved.
There was a nice coffee bar with various barista style coffees but again this wasn’t big enough to seat people. The coffee in the upstairs cafeteria was awful!
