Eleven nights are not enough!
Douglas Jaap | October 3, 2014 | Celebrity Cruises | Celebrity Equinox
We sailed on the Equinox from Civitavechia to Istanbul via Santorini, returning via Kusadasi, Athens, Mykonos and Naples.
The design of the ship is first class with many varied and interesting spaces. It is not crowded even on sea days.
The main dining room is large and well serviced in banqueting style. I suggest you pay extra for Select time dining if you can as it takes the hassle out of when to eat.
The cabin stewards and assistant steward worked exceptionally hard to maintain the high standard of cleanliness of the cabin.
There are a lot of bars to choose from. If you are used to Royal Carribbean ice rinks, rollerblade rinks and shopping malls you will be disappointed. This cruise line is more traditional in its entertainment with a large main pool and an adults only covered pool the main activity areas during the day. Do not miss a lawn game of boules or croquet on the real grass of the lawn club.
The musical entertainment was varied with a slant towards US orientated tastes. Think Sinatra, soft rock and Jazz. The shows were of a good standard but that will vary with the actual acts on each cruise.
If you have teenagers age 14-17 they will have the time of their lives. Prepare for lots of dinners for two as they will meet and make new friends very easily.
Beware the many and varied subtle ways of getting you to spend lots of extra money on photographs and other non-essentials which you did not plan to buy.
The Premium wine package is worth the money. The speciality restaurants if you are European are not. A forty dollar cover charge for Murano is not justifiable either by the food or the service. The former is no higher a standard than the main dining room ( all though that is very good) if the idea of the cover charge is to provide some respite from the banqueting atmosphere of the main dining room hustle and bustle ( which I liked) it fails as fellow passengers are replaced by a horde of over attentive waiters and sommeliers in Murano! I cannot help but think this again is how those from the US perceive how a first class restaurant should be like. It does not compare with the genuine article such as Princes Street number one at the Balmoral in Edinburgh as an example. My advice save your cash for some tours which are value for money. We passed several snaking sweating queues (lines if you prefer the US description) in Istanbul as we saw all of the main tourist attractions without any discernible queuing at all. It’s the lack of hassle, the informative tour guide and air conditioned luxury bus you are paying for.
A very good product but not perfect but then as a wise Turk advised only God is perfect. I would cruise with them again.
