First Cunard cruise – Queen Mary 2

Did a three-week cruise across the Atlantic to New York, including a week along the East Coast of US and back to Southampton. We were in a Brittania balcony room. First of all I do want to say we really enjoyed the trip. Atlantic was calm both ways and the ports we visited we really enjoyed, however, Cunard’s marketing about how luxurious and wonderful their ships are, can leave them open to more criticism than perhaps other cruise companies.
The ship itself in public areas is very smart. Decorated in an elegant Art Deco inspired style. Food was generally good. Service again generally good (especially in the restaurants) but none of it had a wow factor which you expect when you look at Cunard marketing. We have done many P & O cruises and overall, did not find Cunard any better. Our cabin (or stateroom in Cunard world) was fine but the bathroom was a little tired. The biggest problem was that it was directly under a couple of table tennis tables and the noise of the thumps of people leaping around all day became very annoying. We paid a lot of money for this cruise and did not expect this level of disturbance. It was cabin number 11064 if anyone is thinking of booking. Avoid, avoid! Cunard did give us a second cabin to go back to during the day if we wanted to rest and eventually gave us $1,000 on board credit as compensation but really, a customer should not be put in this position. This possibly coloured our overall opinion of Cunard. Other negatives when I compare with P & O: eye watering alcohol prices, not always enough staff in the Terrace Bar or Theatre so couldn’t easily get drinks, not enough staff showing you where to go on excursions, the Verandah restaurant did not change its menu in the 3 weeks we were on board, entertainment ok but not wow and so on.. Soooo, basically what I am saying is that it’s fine but underwhelming when you take into the marketing blurb. Will stick to P & O in future.
