Not quite the cruise that we expected
Ian Pearce | January 20, 2020 | Cunard | Queen Mary 2
We travelled from Southampton on 15 December 2019 to New York, then on to the Caribbean, back to New York and returned to Southampton on 10 January 2020. Overall we enjoyed the cruise. The food was good, but not outstanding, the meal on Christmas day was a disappointment but New Years Day was much better. The entertainment, lectures etc. were also good. The service was very good in the restaurants, particularly so in the Veranda restaurant, even though you had to pay $39 each to experience it. On the first trip across the Atlantic they ran out of Weetabix and Rice Crispies, I would have thought that they should have a better idea of logistics by now. Later on in the cruise they ran out of Schweppes tonic water and Asbach Brandy (disaster).
Our Balcony State Room was adequate but tired, I believe she is in for a refurbishment this year.
This trip had been to celebrate our Golden Wedding anniversary and overall we enjoyed it but we will not travel Cunard again. The last time was on Victoria which we enjoyed far more, but still got coughs. We will stick to P&O in future, and their adult only ships.
In fairness, QM2 is a Transatlantic Liner, not a Cruise Ship and I could appreciate why she was designed as she was. Far better to have the buffet on Deck 7 than on deck 12 when crossing the Atlantic in a Force 10 Storm. We found the Theatre design a pain to find a good seat with an uninterrupted view of the stage due to Columns and the glass balustrade around the perimeter.
My main problem was the 15% surcharge on everything that you ordered, and then they expected a gratuity as well. This could be because I am a Brit and only give gratuities for good or outstanding service, not as a matter of course.
Unfortunately there was an awful lot of coughs and colds going about and, due to the generosity of fellow passenger, we both ended up with them and my wife had a chest infection. The doctor was very good and we received good treatment.
Overall it was good, not great, but not the best experience that we have had cruising.
