QM2 Coronation cruise
Noel Donaldson | May 15, 2023 | Cunard | Queen Mary 2
A last minute advertised 6 day cruise, on sale Thursday lunch and sold out in about 2 hours. The idea seemed a great idea, we did plan to go away at about that time and the price was unmissable so off we trotted to Southampton for the Tuesday sailing to Liverpool and back.
Our second journey on QM2 so we knew the ropes so to speak, we had a cheap balcony but it was quite large in floor area and was fine for us. The cabin was as you would expect, nice to have drawers for your drawers and plenty hangers in the wardrobes. As ever the cabin staff were excellent as all the ships company.
The stop in Liverpool was really good as we were next to the outdoor Eurovision Song Contest stage and a short walk to the Gerry Marsden terminal for the obligatory cross Mersey sail, and as ever we didn’t walk alone to the ferry.
The celebration for the Coronation on board was special. A walk through street party afternoon tea was more than impressive, 3 ice sculptures and all the food you can hope for with entertainment in some of the dining rooms. Then on the day itself the option of watching King Charles being crowned in your cabin or in the main theatre gave flexibility to see why us britts do pomp and ceremony better than anyone else in the world. I did suggest none royalists were offered the chance to be rescued in the man over board exercises but this wasn’t taken up.
We liked the ship though wouldn’t book again for the ship but would for the itinerary due to the ship and entertainment being old fashioned, more titanic than Arvia and also the us and them with the class system which was highlighted when we were queuing for the street party and as we passed the captain in the doorway a lady started to push in. The captain saw this and asked the person to join the queue at the back. ‘But I am platinum!’ She said. She was sent to the back.
So other than the privileged and plebs situation it was a really good trip which we really appreciated.
Just a note to finish with, as a guide to how Cunard treat there passengers is that 41 people were on board from the world cruise who were unable to fly home due to health and flying restrictions. The ship had been due to sail to New York before this trip was planned and as the ship wasn’t going there until the end of May they were where as Cunard guests until the next go to the USA. That is a caring company.
