QM2 – Norwegian Fjords
alan veats | November 19, 2017 | Cunard | Queen Mary 2
We have recently returned from a one week cruise on QM2 going from Southampton to the Norwegian Fjords. This is the first time we had travelled Cunard, previously we have travelled on Carnival,P&O,Thompson,NCL,Star and Celebrity. Our expectations for the ship were fully met,the food was good, although the self catering at Breakfast resembled a rugby scrum at times, and generally the evening and daytime entertainment were of a high standard. The cabin was a good size too with plenty of coathangers in the wardrobe, certainly nothing to complain about here.
So what could have been a very good cruise was destroyed by the cancellation of our stop at Geiranger. For those who are not familiar with Norway ,Geiranger is regarded as “the jewel in the crown ” when visiting the Norway coastline. We were advised of this soon after we had boarded the ship and received a short letter explaining why shortly thereafter. The reason given was “due to concerns over our ability to secure a safe anchoring position at Geiranger.” We were advised that we would be stopping at Alesund instead. The weather was cloudy but the seas were calm so that could not have been the reason.Given cruise itineraries are booked up to two years in advance how can Cunard justify not stopping at Geiranger.
We had many nationalities on the QM2,several hundred Americans and Canadians and many who had travelled from further afield. I feel very diappointed for them as Cunard has severely let them down.
I will be writing to Cunard to express my concerns at their decision and hopefully I will get a better explanation but no doubt for legal reasons I will be told the same story. My particular concern is that if Cunard can maker these decisions at a moments notice for apparently no good reason what confidence does one have of them honouring their port stops on future voyages.Without a good explanation I have lost confidence in Cunard.
