Not as good as expected

This was a repeat of a similar cruise up the French and Spanish rivers we took two years ago. The standards are dropping significantly. Most of the fairly average food was tarted up with alcohol to give it some flavour – unfortunately, I can’t digest alcohol without serious side effects and when challenged I received just a shrug of the shoulders and a suggestion to only pick from other few poor choices that I wasn’t inspired by. My wife with a lactose intolerance was well looked after in the evenings but at lunch time there was no assistance available to advise on the contents of the dishes – we had to guess what was OK. In spite of the crew understanding the problem, some dishes that were said to be lactose free were clearly not as she suffered several times from a reaction. This did not happen two years ago.
The itinerary was badly planned as we had only 4 ports of call in 14 days (but with 4 days river cruising) and we had to suffer more sequential sea days than necessary – a better selection of ports to spread out sea days would have been an improvement. La Rochelle was not a river port, and no shuttle to the town centre was available unless you paid their outrageous charge for a half or full day bus service to town with no choice as to when to travel. We were given the option of a shuttle to the port gates and then find and use the local buses. No information on these buses was available on board.
Finally, we found that each cabin steward on our deck now has to clean 18 cabins. When our steward had to leave because of family problems – she was not replaced and our cabin was then serviced by the two steward either side of us, meaning that each had 27 cabins to manage. Hardly surprising that it was rare for our cabin to be cleaned until about lunchtime! Don’t Fred Olsen have one or two standby crews for just such a problem?
We were so disappointed after it had been so good two years ago. The Weather colder than the UK didn’t help!!
