Caribbean and Azores

Our first time on The Britannia and it was not without problems.
The stairs/lifts are something to behold. We had been warned about these from our booking agent but in reality, it was far more of a problem than we would have imagined. There are no stairs in the centre of the ship and when trying to go to some decks the lifts do not stop there. For example we had our meals in the Oriental Restaurant on deck 5 stern. To get there you had to get a lift to deck 6 and then walk a considerable distance along the ship and then down a further flight of stairs or use the lifts at the stern of the ship because these were the only lifts that stopped at deck 5 – this necessitated walking a considerable distance along the corridor from our cabin. On a number of occasions when passengers called a lift it went straight past or started to descend and then ascended before reaching the deck requested. Many passengers became frustrated and just walked to wherever they wanted to go. In talking to some of the passengers in mobility scooters they stated, on occasions they had been waiting over half-hour for a lift that had adequate space available for their scooter.
There is no ‘wow’ factor on this ship and everything appears disjointed due to the design. The entertainment was very good, but if attending a function in the ‘Live Lounge’ due to the lack of seating, one had to arrive very early, often having to leave the dinner table early. The lounge is of adequate size, but available seating is totally inadequate. There were instances where passengers arrived and then walked out because of this.
The food was good and in addition, we had excellent meals in The Beach House and Limelight Club, for which we had paid extra. However, on many days we decided to have breakfast in the restaurants, to avoid the throng of people, and the ‘fight’ for a table in the buffet. In the restaurants, the toast was always hard and cold, and our requests for fresh toast were met with discourteous looks from the waiters. The cabin was clean and comfortable, but we had little contact with our steward. The drinks on board were reasonably priced and the cheapest we have encountered on any cruise we have been on. Overall we have no problem with P and O but we will not be cruising on the Britannia again.
