Britannia could and should be a great ship. It has excellent restaurants and facilities but is let down badly on a number of poor design levels. There are no central stairs after deck 7, there is no full promenade deck just a token 1/4 deck 7 times around for a mile ! The layout is confusing and lacks any flow – try and walk from the central atrium to the main oriental restaurant on deck 5 – you find your way blocked by other eateries – you have to walk up to deck 7 and along to the aft stairs and back down again. Similar scenarios can be encountered on various other decks which makes the ships guide map pretty obsolete – it actually requires a snakes and ladders approach to indicate how one should get to certain venues !! The entertainment was rubbish – we left most shows early and one which resembled more of a kids panto only kept our interest for 5 minutes. When it comes to excursions P&O are at their money grabbing best. Virtually all destinations can be reached easily by onshore travel for 1/3 of the P&O price but there is never any mention of where to get a bus or train in the literature in the hope that the punters will ‘bottle’ going alone and sign up for a rip off cattle march through the local streets. Most of the staff were great but there are certainly a few curt ones among the crew !! Cannot fault the cabins but ?10 for 6 bottles of water – Come on P&O don’t you think we are paying enough to justify a free bottle every day in the cabin ??. The whole experience has certainly put us off cruising for the foreseeable future !!
