Cruise & Maritime Voyages offered to assist in evacuations on Australia’s Kangaroo Island amid the country’s ongoing bushfire crisis.
Vasco da Gama cancelled a call at the island township of Penneshaw on Saturday (4 January) after being advised to do so by the South Australian Country Fire Service.
CMV offered its ship to authorities to assist with the evacuation of local islanders and tourists, however, the ship’s assistance was not necessary but CMV Australia guests still contributed to the Australian Red Cross Bushfire Relief.
Local police have said Penneshaw and the nearby town of Kingscote are the only safe places for residents and holidaymakers as fires continue to ravage the island.
Dean Brazier, managing director, CMV Australia, said:
We wish to thank our guests onboard for their patience and understanding of the itinerary change and imagine that they were in support of assisting the bushfire effort and those on Kangaroo Island. We would like to thank them for their patience and understanding during this unprecedented time.
