I’m writing this review now 3mths on and have to say I feel no better about my experience now than I did when I returned home.
It started to go wrong when I was wrongly informed that there was a drinks package & even given the number and reference to book it direct with NCL (after I had given my C/Card details of course) shocked when I was told by NCL that no such package existed ? we were sold the deal with a “Free night in a Barcelona Hotel” if we wanted to travel the day earlier, Great, careful if it seems to good to be true etc etc …
The hotel might have had a Barcelona Post code, just !! it was actualy on the airport industrial estate, just behind the Brewery 30 euros in a cab each way from Barcelona ! Moving on …. In fairness the ship was awsome in every respect ! however all the little things let it all down so far as I was concerned, now, novice of the “all american way” (by my own admision) having only done 2 Ocean Village and 2 Thomson prior to this trip, did I expect the same ? no …. But …. 1st impressions were Jaw dropping but I have to say it was the biggest money machine that I have ever come across, the trips were priced out of all proportion, drinks were over priced to start with and then 15% autogatuity was added then a further 8% tax was added, a standard drink & a beer was coming to $17.70 we paid (two of us) ?195 (Pounds) for the only shore excursion that we did (Cirque Teare)nothing much other than a walk along the coast north of Spez, a local public transport ferry boat along the coast, and the commutor train back to Spez where our coach was waiting to take us back to the Ship…. it didn’t stop there either, Even a photo book with not too many photos in it was $250 + tax at 15%
The dining experience was sold again as fantastic, it wasn’t, good maybe but not fantastic. The “cover charge” resturants that you were encouraged to go to were little above average with the exception of the Circus Dinner & show, that was very good in every respect, the others wasn’t worth the bother of booking nor the extra cost (on typing this maybe a little unfair as we didn’t try them all) we did the steak house, the Chinese, the itailian, and the american diner, the standard dining was every bit as good and in some cases better.
Getting breakfast in the mad rush of 4,000 odd was a challenge at whatever time you tried it, so most of the time we didn’t ? The entertainment was good again don’t take me wrong but not fantastic as you are lead to believe but then it wouldn’t do for everybody’s taste to be the same, It was very American but mostly too American ! By this point the die-hard cruisers are proobably thinking “why go on an american ship then” ? and maybe you’d be right, but maybe my “cruise advisor” should have been more on the ball ? the crowning glory for me was the flights (arranged by NCL) brought us back leaving 7.30pm (as I remember) however we were thrown off the ship at 8am on our depature day with absolutly no care from NCL whatsoever, yes we could have paid for a day trip and our luggage would have appeared at the wrong terminal later that evening (as some of our fellow travelers did and found out) we could have paid for a third party company to take our luggage from the port to appear at the airport later too, by now you’ve guessed the common denominator … You could have paid !!
I of course brought these points up with my “Experianced Cruise Advisor” on my return that sadly seemed to believe that I had “misunderstood” much of my problems, if “problems” is the right term.
To summerise I am not sorry that I went on NCL and had the experience, I am sorry that I wasn’t better informed, the ship was amazing but it proves the point that the best looking most expensive cars are not always nice to drive ?
