Morocco is a mesmerising fusion of cultures, history and landscapes. From the sandy shores of its Atlantic and Mediterranean coastlines to the towering peaks of the Atlas Mountains, and the sweeping dunes of the Sahara Desert, its diverse geography is breathtaking. The country's cities, such as vibrant Marrakech and historic Fez, captivate visitors with their bustling souks, magnificent palaces and ornate mosques.
Morocco is located in North Africa. It is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea to the west and north, and by Algeria to the east and southeast. It is strategically positioned just across the Strait of Gibraltar from Spain, making it a crossroads of Arab, African and European cultures.
Morocco never fails to provide an assault on the senses. The smell of incense wafts through the air as you lose your sense of direction in the souks, while a call to prayer reverberates from a nearby minaret. It’s Africa but not as we know it; Morocco is deceptively easy to get to, especially as cruise lines continue to add this northern state to their itineraries.
Visiting Marrakech is an immersion in a bustling city teeming with culture, history, and vibrant sensory experiences. The city captivates with its labyrinthine medina, filled with bustling souks selling everything from traditional crafts to aromatic spices, while the majesty of landmarks like the Koutoubia Mosque and the enchanting Jardin Majorelle offer peaceful retreats. The fusion of ancient tradition and lively modernity makes a trip to Marrakech a truly unforgettable journey.
Casablanca presents a fascinating blend of traditional Moroccan culture with modern metropolitan life. Home to an astounding architectural showcase, the Hassan II Mosque - one of the largest in the world, it offers an awe-inspiring panorama against the Atlantic Ocean. Alongside its historical richness, the city also thrills with its modern city lifestyle, complete with bustling markets, trendy restaurants, and a pulsing nightlife, making a visit to Casablanca a vivid and exhilarating experience.
Tangier is one of those places that has slowly sidled onto tourists’ to-do lists. Less confident than nearby Casablanca, its strategic importance as the gateway between Europe and Africa owes the city 2,500 years-plus of history that’s hard to replicate anywhere else in Morocco. Tangier’s Medina is encircled by the walls of a 15th century Portuguese fortress, where getting lost is all part of the fun. The streets are narrow and the architecture fascinating, and there’s just no telling what haul of expertly bartered goods you’ll return home with.
